McNeill spends a few pages at the beginning of the book to give a brief history of rug-making, which is followed by "Basic Tips" where all we need to know about: materials used/needed, cutting or tearing strips, different methods for joining the fabric strips, single crochet, double crochet, slip stitch, changing colors, and the finished edge is outlined and illustrated. The Look Inside feature shows a bit of each of the 16 projects in the book.
I grew up watching my mom crochet rag rugs using old clothing. She painstakingly removed buttons, zippers, sewed together the cut strips, and then crocheted throughout the winter months. Toward the end of her life, I tried to teach her to join her strips using the slit method, which I thought was easier than sewing the strips together, but she'd have none of it. She did it the way she had always done. Whichever way you choose to join your strips, whether you use yardage of fabric, recycled clothing, or old sheets to make your rugs, the instructions within this book will see you to the end of a beautiful finished product.
