The author's carefully researched history, always a Jude Knight specialty, shines through in the setting and above all in the details of life in the Regency era. The use of a canal journey as a metaphor for relationship is brilliant, and the details of life on the boat endearing.
As in all Jude Knight books the hero and heroine are surrounded by a cast of secondary characters, some of the known from other stories, and some of them unique to this book. Each is a well rounded. Not one is a flat stereotype, even the villains.
The suspenseful plot carried me along at a steady pace to a satisfying conclusion. Even when you think you know the villain behind some incidents she keeps you guessing with surprises at several turns.
While I saw two advance versions of this wonderful book, I bought my own to keep. I want more stories of the Golden Redepennings. I can hardly wait.
Alex is a wonderful character: humble, hard-working, uncomplaining and so very, very loving. Ella is a bit more of a mystery, whose life's backstory is revealed in small bits throughout the book. Together, they work to create a new life that will help each of them overcome the sorrows and difficulties they've experienced. In that, they are so lucky to have not only each other, but also loving family members, friends, and even some devoted servants.
The continuity of characters from previous writings makes for a joyful reunion for those of us who have had the privilege of reading earlier works. However, even if this is your first Jude Knight book, you should have no trouble understanding the references. It's a lovely read with a good dose of mystery, some wonderful, detailed research, and above all-- a beautiful romance.
The heart of this novel is the incredible journey of discovery that Alex and Ella take. What is it like to love a person and imagine that person feels nothing but friendship for you? Jude Knight takes us on this journey and we meander slowly along with our characters as life and villains converge to further damage two already damaged lovers.
The ending was more than satisfactory. I loved this story and highly recommend it to all readers who enjoy a historical romance with a more mature hero and heroine.
Whilst compromises must be made along the way as pursuit of Ella persists with factions of mean intent, life for Alex is equally as perilous as that of Ella whilst others harbour long-term grudges. What is more Ella’s escape involves finding some means to evade highways and byways; hence the route chosen draws the reader into a very different way of life, but needs must for a man of good breeding and the social whirl of the ton intrudes momentarily. With that momentary intrusion a stroke of royal luck sets Alex ill at ease, for gifts and titles are not always as one might expect. Thus reawakening desires and long-held misconceptions are faced, whilst evil doings set precedence for fear and heighten nightmare scenarios. But love does find a way through the mire and fog of lost years and imagined betrayals, which makes this novel a thoroughly engrossing, pleasurable and highly recommended read for lovers of depth driven love stories. Well written, concise in detail, Ms Knight’s characters are fully-fleshed and I have a notion I will remember them and this novel for quite a good while.
