Product Description

Director Milos Foreman spun E.L. Doctorow's semi-fictional novel of 1900s Americana into a richly detailed period piece, as the fates of the era's famous and infamous intertwined with those of a well-off New Rochelle family, Harlem pianist Coalhouse Walker (Howard E. Rollins, Jr.), and Jewish immigrant Tateh (Mandy Patinkin). Exceptional ensemble cast also features Mary Steenburgen, Brad Dourif, Elizabeth McGovern, Debbie Allen, and-after a 20-year screen hiatus-James Cagney. 155 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English.

The film is so fine that time has not diminished its brilliance one iota. The casting is utter perfection, the cinematography and set design impeccable and the score wonderful. After watching the deleted scene that introduced the character of Emma Goldman, i realized how brilliant the editing was. Even though that scene comes right off the pages of the book, it would be like a brick in the punch bowl in the film. (unnecessary to the plot.) and possessing the only weak performance, that of Goldman.)The version that was released is far superior to the director's working print. I just want ot ment ion that Michael Weller's screenplay is a sort of miracle. It takes a wonderful book and turns it into that rarest of things, a film that is even better than its source.

If you've already seen the movie "Ragtime" and like or love it, this purchase is a no-brainer. I had the old VHS and DVD, and not surpringly, Paramount's 4K-film-transfer blu-ray looks and sounds MUCH better—in fact, better to an awesome degree. The sound is very good too, which is important here not just for dialogue but also for the music. Randy Newman scored this film, and his Oscar-nominated music gives the film a beautiful aural texture, sometimes wistful, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes sadly ironic. The package includes a second disk of a director's cut workprint, meaning there are places where the new material is not filmic. There is also a digital code (mind is guaranteed good until November 2023), a repeat of some older extras (such as deleted scenes and "Revisiting Ragtime"), and a couple of new extras (new deleted and extended scenes, plus "Remembering Ragtime").

Milo’s Forman’s “Ragtime” remains an uneven and sprawling film that really should have been longer or tackled as a mini-series. Based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel of the same name with a script by Michael Weller (and uncredited rewrites by Bo Goldman), the film features a terrific cast including the late Joward Rollins, Samuel L. Jackson (in his first film role), Brad Dourif, Mary Steenbergen, James Olson, the late James Cagney and Pa O’Brien, Mandy Patinkin, Elizabeth McGovern, Donald O’Connor, Jeff Daniels and Debbie Allen.

Doctorow’s convoluted tale focuses on an unnamed white family who takes in an abandoned black child and the mother Sarah (Allen) to prevent the police from charging her with abandonment. When Coalhouse (Rollins) shows up to offer to marry Sarah. Things go awry for Coalhouse when a bigoted fireman damages her brand new Model T and Coalhouse seeks justice.

My description hardly does justice to Doctorow’s story much less the adaption of it which compliments the novel.

The transfer here is sourced from a brand new 4K restoration of the film. The Blu-ray looks terrific but this release makes one ask why Paramount didn’t release this as a 4K disc for the film. Still, compliments to Paramount for including a rough cut of the film (referred to as a Director’s Cut but I don’t know that Forman ever prepared a DC) which features about 20 minute of additional footage as well as some alternate angles/takes of various sequences. Some, ofmthe alternate footage is in an infished state and some in black and white.

The audio is presented in 5.1 but keep in mind the work print DC is in stereo sound.

The special features include deleted scenes, “Ragtime Revisited” which features the screenwriter reflecting on the film along with the commentary track, ported over from the previous Blu-ray with Milo’s Forman and producer Michael Hausman plus “Remembering Ragtime” from the earlier release.

Keep in mind that the work print is in decent condition but not restored.

As with all of the Paramount Select titles, it comes with a slipcase which opens to reveal a replica of the original poster.

A terrific sprawling film from Oscar winner Forman with a great cast, “Ragtime” may be a bit unwieldy but it’s a marvelous film with terrific performances.

I have loved this film since it was first released; in my opinion it's quite underappreciated and a true piece of cinematic art. To say that it looks better here than on my DVD or VHS versions is an understatement; details and clarity abound and are at times breathtaking. The work cut is not exactly revelatory but it's still interesting to see some extra footage. Highly recommended.

Sadly, an under appreciated film deserving of a full director's cut and as many extras as can be found/created.

I had this movie on dvd, never finished it, it got lost over the years, this time around, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The social events of back then, still relevant today. The transfer is much sharper and the work print was worth seeing.
