The only reason I didn't give five stars is that the violence was a bit too much for me... the fact that the writer is clearly talented kept my interest high and compelled me to read on.
The lines between the sci-fi world and the real world blurred many times and it was confusing to be going into an alien world just when I felt grounded in the characters' real world. I could have read this as a futuristic novel on this planet (much like J.D. Robb's/Nora Roberts' Eve Dallas series) and it would have been easier.
Nevertheless, the writer presented a story of sacrificial love in a gripping and well-written way. I can't wait to read the author's next book and hope she has more to offer in the future!
What are the limits of forgiveness?
Is there hope for the salvation or redemption of even the most evil person, a Hitler or a Stalin?
"Rain From Heaven" is a science-fiction story, but like this author's other works, it merely uses the conventions of the form to teach a deeper lesson. And it is a lesson that we all need to learn, especially in our day and age, before it is too late.
Posting a plot summary here would be somewhat misleading, as it would read something like this: "Average Joe hero and brilliant heroine work together to take down supervillain." It sounds like every single corny plot from every single corny Hollywood action movie. And yet, it is absolutely nothing of the sort.
Read this book. It will certainly make you look at yourself - and those around you - in a different way. It might even change your life.
It is very well written with interesting twists and turns. It's a book for young adults, adults, older adults!
One sign of a good book for me is if I can identify with a character. No problem here; I identified with all three major characters and that is a new experience for me. These are vibrant, multi-faceted, changing people, and I found myself caring about what happens to them.
I loved the book so much that I shared it with a good friend. He said I am to blame for him staying up all night reading it and that it made him cry. How many novels make a man cry? I like the endings to the chapters - they made me want to turn the page (so to speak) and read more. Like my friend, I cried - especially at the ending (I won't say if it was because of sadness or joy or both).
This is a definite two thumbs up and I am hoping that this new author will be writing more novels in the future because I am not satisfied with just one.
