The men meet, and the sizzling electricity begins. Oversexed Blair begins a dedicated stalking of the handsome Proctor, who secretly likes the attention but is intent on closing the agency. Does Blair intend to seduce Proctor just to keep the Exotique open? It matters not a bit. As horny as he is … and as sensual and needy as Proctor is … their sexual antics drive the tale— oh, along with a sudden murder victim and a full-fledged mystery that needs solving.
I adored this story for its fantasy-fable elements, its outrageous images, and the undeniably stimulating, full-bore sex. The minor characters are a hoot: a boomerang-wang criminal, a barefoot and tattooed runner, a hairy model with a too-full trunk full of junk. Some of the images had me laughing out loud: a foot-long phallic salami sizzling on the stovetop; a sudden ménage (actually menagerie) in a gay bathhouse; Proctor wearing only shirt-tails as his bare bum dangles from a ladder fifty stories from the street.
Ryan Field has a masterful way of capturing the voices of the main characters, so there’s never a doubt who’s speaking. And the tone, kind of a rainbow-noir, is howlingly funny, told mostly from the point of view of the irritable but turned-on Proctor as he responds to the man we suspect will become his forever-after.
On to the next Rainbow Detective series book. I am hooked.
