First things first: The Rainbow Light Organic Prenatal Multivitamin DOES NOT contain American Ginseng. When I read the reviews saying that it was a ingredient unsafe for developing babies, I immediately grabbed my bottle to look for the ingredient. I didn't find it listed as an ingredient, so, I went to the Rainbow Light website to take a look. American Ginseng DOES NOT appear in the Prenatal Multivitamin, but is DOES appear in the Women's Multivitamin. The bottles look almost identical, but the ingredients are NOT the same. Now, I can't say for certain that it wasn't an ingredient in past prenatal recipes, but it does not appear on the ingredient list currently (May 2013).

Now, for my review: I ordered my first bottle of Rainbow Light Organic Prenatal Multivitamin from a different site, when my husband and I were trying for #2. I came to Amazon when I was nearly out of my first bottle, to see if I could get a better price... AND AMAZON DELIVERED with a lower price! My husband and I are now expecting #2 (just 6.5 weeks along) and I've been very pleased with this vitamin. Firstly, no awful smell or aftertaste. In the early stages of pregnancy when morning sickness is taking it's toll, it's nice to know, that something as important as a prenatal vitamin won't make you sick. I took the [typical pink bottle prenatal] with my first, and they made me sick to my stomach. These vitamins can be taken any time of day; with a meal or with out. The only gripe I had is that the serving size is 4 pills. Folic Acid is extremely important in early stages of pregnancy, for cell growth and neural tube development. To get your recommended daily dose, you have to take all four pills. What I do like, though, is that there's isn't too much Vitamin A. Too much Vitamin A can cause birth defects.

I plan to conceive soon and am a midwife, so I'm very conscious of pregnancy-related purchases and searched a long time for the "perfect" prenatal vitamin. I wanted one that has natural sources of iron to better improve my hemoglobin and prevent pregnancy-related iron-deficiency anemia. I prefer "whole" sources rather than "piecemeal" sources. In other words, most companies shear off the iron atom from an amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins), but the iron atom is unstable by itself, so they have to bind it to another atom, hence ferrous sulfate (iron and sulfur), which your body has only limited capacity to digest and use. In such cases, I and my fellow midwives usually have to refer our clients to natural sources of iron in supplement form, such as Floridix or Chlorophyll. However, this company uses the whole amino acid rather than shearing off each atom, combining it to another atom, and throwing it in the pill, so theoretically it would be more usable by the body. I'll update later (hopefully in less than a year ;-) ) when I've gone through a pregnancy and can say how it worked for me. I also wanted a supplement that has little or no calcium since I have magnesium-deficiency headaches and calcium interferes with the uptake of magnesium. Unfortunately, this supplement does not have magnesium in it, but I'm used to taking a magnesium supplement and since it doesn't have calcium, I can take my magnesium at the same time. (Interestingly, calcium supplementation increases the risk of heart attack according to a BMJ study and yet magnesium supplementation alone without calcium decreases the risk of osteoporosis. Hmmm...Read more ›

I have used these in the past while NOT pregnant to help my hair and nails grow (because I read that taking prenatal vitamins will help grow stronger, thicker hair and nails) These did not upset my stomach when I took them before and did help my nails grow out faster (Biotin helped my hair re-grow)

Now that I am pregnant I am back to these again, because of the natural ingredients without chemicals that can be dangerous to pregnant women & their baby. This is my first pregnancy & I already have a vegan prenatal vitamin that unfortunately contains Chamomile (from my research I know that Chamomile contains Caffeine & should be avoided during the first trimester due to increased risk of miscarriage-Deva Vegan Prenatal contain Chamomile in their ingredient list) I am super picky about what I eat and ingest (vitamins included) so this time being pregnant I plan on taking no chances (high risk pregnancy)

I would recommend these to everyone that is either pregnant or trying to conceive (take prenatal's ahead of conception) because the natural ingredient list and because they didn't upset my stomach before pregnancy ( i have a sensitive stomach) so I am hoping they don't now. There is no after taste or burps with these either. I took them with food before and plan to do the same again to reduce any chances of stomach upset. Drink plenty of water with these and as always read labels and understand what you are taking and why.

These vitamins are great! My nails are long and very strong, my hair is shiny, I feel good on them (not as tired as I was getting before I started them, and I'm still in my first trimester), and they are GENTLE! I have some nausea off and on with this second pregnancy and these vitamins have never caused a problem for me. I even took them on a mostly empty stomach once and they still did not bother me at all.

Another great thing is the capsule form. They are not "monster" sized and they don't smell bad. There is no after-taste (if you happen to be burping a lot in the beginning). My midwife also recommends, and has taken, these vitamins. My first pregnancy, I tried doctor prescribed prenatals and was getting debilitating migraines for weeks. The pain was like nothing I'd ever experienced before and I have horrible neck problems from an auto accident, so I'm familiar with migraines; these were unreal. Finally, I forgot to take my prenatal one day and - surprise! - no headache that day. So I conducted a little experiment and discovered that my migraines coincided with the vitamins. Also, one of the last things I would put in my body now that I'm more educated is a drug-company produced vitamin that is filled with all kinds of wonderful chemical additives (you know how that pill is shiny? It's a CHEMICAL they add to make it shiny!). Go organic if you can! This is a wonderful organic, gentle and SAFE vitamin. I hope this review was helpful! Best of luck!
