While the hardware is well designed, the software is lacking. While the screen is reasonably large, there is a lot of "white space" that could either be used by a larger font (adjustable in size) for better readability at a distance or more detailed graphs. Where it is really, really disappointing is with respect to outbound (solar, wind) exported to the grid. While it can show you the number of kWh (total ever exported), it doesn't have the ability to show graphs of this data or even the amount "earned" for exported data. This could open an entirely different market for rainforest.
The USB port offers great possibility to program the unit for these "complex" functions but atlas, it can only use this to upload new firmware and change the three tiers of power costs. The USB port does also allow you to run an application to view the current power consumption of power from the device, it doesn't have any utilities to do much of anything else, like export to common cloud based monitoring solutions.
The EMU-2 could really knock it out of the park with the current hardware but the firmware really holds this unit back. If even just a little more effort were to be dedicated to improving the readability of the information and fully utilizing the value the USB port can offer, this unit could be a real winner.
Given the low cost and ease of configuration, it is still an "ok" unit for power consumption monitoring but don't expect to be overly impressed. Likely the unit was designed to be as simple as possible for general, public use. It would be great if they offered an "advanced" firmware - heck, even charge the "advanced" users for it and turn it into a revenue stream.
