Fascinating and hard to put down, IF THE RAINS DON'T CLEANSE is CNN Breaking News disguised as historical fiction. It brings focus to the turmoil faced by American missionaries caught up in Congo's independence, a drama they unknowingly helped bring about by educating and infusing Congolese leaders with their Western faith and values. As American Ambassador, I worked with many missionaries struggling to cope with the political instability that still plagues those countries in the wake of independence. Ben Patrick Johnson's novel captures that struggle. From beginning to end of this riveting account, heroine Eva Dunagan acts as a historical Christiane Amanpour as fiction and reality are indistinguishable. --HON. AUBREY HOOKS, U.S. Ambassador to Ivory Coast, former Ambassador to Congo
Give in to Eva Dunagan's graceful voice and you will find yourself on a harrowing and beautiful journey, rendered with the great insight and keen eye of a master storyteller. --CHRISTOPHER RICE, NY Times best-selling author of A Density of Souls and Blind Fall
As a writer and advocate for Africa, I could not put down Ben Patrick Johnson's IF THE RAINS DON'T CLEANSE. This magnificent book with an extraordinary story based on Johnson's own family is a must read for anyone who wants not only to understand Africa but who wants one hell of a good read! Can't wait for the movie and trust me, there will be one. --DAVID MIXNER, Civil Rights Activist and Best-Selling Author

Johnson's common denominator is all of his roles is giving something a voice.
What a powerful voice he has.
In "If The Rains Don't Cleanse" , Johnson gives a powerful voice to a female missionary in the 1950's Belgian Congo. Her name is Eva Dungan. The charector is based on story's Johnson heard growing up from his parents, themselves missionaries in the Congo.
Many topics are woven within the story. Love,Faith,Determination, and Revolution to name a few.
Eva and her husband Richard, travel to the Congo as missionaries in the 1950's. They are young newlyweds, perhaps a bit naive, but most of all want to help people with the best of intentions.
Eva digs in her heals, and struggles with their new life as well as herself. The beliefs she grew up with were tested as she and her husband dealt with a different culture half a world away.
If the Rains Don't Cleanse is the product of a son trying to give a voice to a period of his mothers life, long before he was born.
It's a great adeventure.
Vivid in detail, evocative in description, IF THE RAINS DON'T CLEANSE is a major contribution to the genre of post-colonial fiction.
