This is the continuing tales of the new Terran Republic. I love space opera, it is the good stuff. And this series is real good so far. Set in the 22nd century, the Terrans have suddenly become aware that there are five other alien races, all more advanced and also capable of FTL space flight.
This story is about Caine Riordan and a group of humans visiting the Slaasriithi using the Slaasriithi FTL carrier of ships. As they are jumping up to ten light years per segment, they stop to see their worlds including a tide locked planet around a red dwarf star. But as usual, there are others trying to sabotage the mission.

So, what do you get? Without spoiling your enjoyment…Hang on to your hats.
After successfully preventing an alien alliance from conquering homeworld, you’d think Caine Riordan would seize the opportunity to rest on his laurels. Sadly, he gets no such opportunity for new players emerge in an ever fomenting brew of political and racial intrigue who view humanity as the ultimate menace. Overtly friendly, these creatures a beyond deadly, and hatch schemes by which their greatest possible nemesis might be obliterated before they ever become capable of presenting a threat. Say what? They’re judging us on what we MIGHT become?
What a refreshing change these evolutionary divergent aliens are. They’re not just “different”- they’re culturally, ethically and philosophically extreme. So much so, that as an astronomer it made me ponder…”What if?”
Charles Gannon has hidden a succinct and timely reminder within the pages of this engaging adventure, for mankind does indeed stand on the cusp of reaching out to the stars. What we find out there might not even look like us, and even if they do, what’s to say our cosmic cousins are going to like what they find?
Tread carefully, for Caine Riordan won’t be there to keep things from blowing up in our faces.
Not only is this a thrill-a-minute space-opera, it has genuine enough hard sf elements to appeal to a geek like me. Gannon’s exploration of possible evolutionary divergence—both natural and manipulated—had me hooked.
While I generally dislike the lone hero who saves the universe type of novel, this series is not too much like that, thankfully, and complexity and detail of the alien species and their characters and worlds are an enormous joy to read. Added to that is massive amount of back-stabbing and treachery that most of the characters and species engage in, good and bad, and you have a wondrous mix that makes for a fantastic read. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
This book picks up immediately after what happens in Trial by Fire, with Caine Riordan doing what he does best, dealing with aliens, and secrets.
The only problem with these books, is while they answer questions you have from previous books, they also create more questions than were answered. You are left wanting more, which is a good thing.
I eagerly await the next chapter in the adventures of Caine Riordan.
