Run-DMC's 1986 rap masterpiece, Raising Hell, storms out of the musical gate. One of the albums that defined the transition from the old school to the new school, with its heavy rhyme sequences layered on top of drum-machine beats, and an assortment of pulse-quickening record stabs thrown in for good measure, it's relentless. The late-'80s lyricism of MCs Run and DMC is not as complex as that of today's microphone mathematicians, but that was never the point--what they lack in finesse, they more than make up in intensity, authority, and flat-out lung power. The fact that almost every line of "Peter Piper" has become the hook of another hip-hop song is a testament to the power of these originals (the "not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good" line alone has been used in countless turntablist routines). The roots of rap/metal fusion are in here, too, with songs like "It's Tricky," "Walk this Way," and the title cut making use of distorted rock guitars and pounding drums, while "Proud to Be Black" helped launch the Afrocentric-conscious rap era of the late '80s. And "My Adidas" prefigured the brand-name fetishism that hip-hop is just beginning to get over. When it comes to beats, bumps, and b-boy bravado, there has never been anyone else like Run-DMC, and this album shows why. --Joe Schloss

This is the rap album that brought rap to the mainstream. It is a timeless hip-hop classic. Seller send in good packaging, and it arrived on time.

Hip-hop could have been a passing fad if it weren't for this album. The fusion of rock and rap heard in "Walk This Way" had everyone dancing along and brought Aerosmith's career back from the dead. (I'm a fan of theirs, so an extra yay from me.) And there are extra topics, from raps based on nursery rhymes ("Peter Piper"), idiots ("You Be Illin' " and "Dumb Girl"), and product placement ("My Adidas"). You can rock and groove to any song here, even the spare "Perfection" with only a drum as back-up.

Like most white kids, my introduction to rap came via Run D.M.C. and their big radio hit, "Walk This Way". After 3 months of really wanting "Raising Hell", I had enough money to buy the cassette for $6.99 at the now defunct mall music store Discount Records. At the time, I was 13 years old and in 8th grade. Of course my very conservative parents hated them, my father for racist reasons and my mother for music reasons. He liked country and she liked easy listening.
Hearing the album today, memories come flooding back. Just like 501s, this is what the cool kids had. Most importantly, I discovered just how FUN and NERDY these guys are. Anybody into current rap and hip-hop should give this a spin and see how it's done old school!

5.0 out of 5 stars Éxito... pero no solo en ventas
Reviewed in Spain on November 29, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco Fantastico!
Reviewed in Italy on March 12, 2017

    Servizio Amazon sempre ottimo.
