Review

"Numeroff and Munsinger knocked it out of the park with Raising a Hero! This beautiful children's book teaches about the love, dedication and hard work that go into raising a service dog to help people with disabilities achieve independence. Proceeds from this book are going to one of my favorite organizations, Canine Companions for Independence, where the memory of our son Tommy Lasorda, Jr. lives on in a future service dog hero named 'Spunky.'" --Tommy Lasorda, Sr.

Love this book! From a CCI Puppy Raiser, thank you Laura for writing this book! I plan to take the book along with my service dog in training to local day cares. I'll read the book to children and share the joy of "becoming a hero".

There are a few items the puppy in the book is allowed to do that CCI puppies shouldn't do (sleep in our bed for example) but an adorable book nonetheless. I will treasure this book!

I'm a volunteer puppy raiser with Canine Companions for Independence. When I saw this book, I knew I had to have it, as I often visit classrooms and scout groups to explain what service dogs do. This book offers a great window into the life of a puppy that becomes a service dog in terms young children can understand. The illustrations are wonderful, too. I'm delighted with my purchase, and look forward to sharing the story with many children.

Love, love, love this book. It is great for ALL readers and dog lovers, and just those of us that love all of Numeroff's work. This meets and exceeds her standards. The story of a boy and his special dog, it is an accurate portrayal of a service dog in training while still being a sweet and funny story. I am a school librarian and I have read this one aloud several times and the kids love it every time. Definitely a first purchase for all.

Raising a Hero is about Max, a puppy who wants to grow up to be an assistance dog. Sam is his volunteer puppy raiser for the next year and the two share their journey in this wonderful children's book by Laura Numeroff. Illustrator Lynn Munsinger does a remarkable job of showing Max's feelings of joy and pride as he learns each new task.

From the back cover: "A portion of the sale of this book supports Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization providing assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities. www.cci,org"

A disclaimer that I am indeed a volunteer puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence (five puppies so far!). I appreciate Ms. Numeroff's effort and support of raising awareness of assistance dogs, volunteer puppy raising, and CCI.

Love this book! "Raising a Hero" is a heart warming story about a little boy who is raising a puppy to become a service dog. The story is engaging and the illustrations are wonderful. I am a recipient of one of these heroes from Canine Companions for Independence. I am grateful to have this book so that I can share with others some of the things Buffy did while she was with her puppy raisers before she become my gift of independence. An educational and fun story that will be enjoyed by children as well as adults!

As a school teacher and CCI puppy raiser, this book was spot on, and professionally written and illustrated by two veterans in the children's literature field. The puppy reminded my students of our school puppy. The illustrations easily bring youngsters into the world of service dog puppy raising. There were a few non-CCI moments (popcorn at the movies, puppy in bed) but overall a wonderful book for inspiring children.

Raising a Hero is the story of a boy, Sam, who is raising Max, a puppy who will become an assistance dog. The text is perfect, and the illustrations are wonderful. This is a superb book for children who can't yet read through early readers. It is especially wonderful that it will introduce many children to assistance dogs. The author is donating some of the proceeds to Canine Companions for Independence which is mentioned on the back cover.

This book is a wonderful story about a Canine Companions Puppy in Training who is growing up to help people with disabilities. It is heart warming and very educational, and as a puppy raiser I can say it is spot on! I can not wait for the sequel about Max as a working service dog!
