The greatest lesson we teach our kids isn't anything we say--it's what we do.
Many parents are surprised to discover just how little we're actually modeling the behaviors we hope to pass on--qualities such as unconditional love, gentleness, forgiveness, patience, gratitude, humility, and more. This unique book offers a fresh way to look at molding your children: by focusing more on adding good behaviors than on eliminating bad ones.
Grounding her advice in Scripture, Sami Cone shares stories from her own life to show these principles in action. And she outlines practical things you can do right now to create a home and family that exhibits love, harmony, and generosity of spirit in a self-centered world.
"I'm thankful for women like Sami who are dedicated to teaching our next generation that 'things' don't matter--others do."--Chrys Howard, Duck Dynasty
"An extraordinary tool for raising selfless kids in an it's-all-about-me generation."--Pete Wilson, senior pastor of Cross Point Church and bestselling author of Plan B
"Sami Cone shows us how to shepherd the hearts of our children with biblical wisdom and contemporary courage. Get ready to experience more of Jesus in your everyday life and lead your kids closer to the heart of God."--Renee Swope, bestselling author of A Confident Heart and cohost of Everyday Life with Lysa & Renee on Proverbs 31 Ministries Radio

Sami's ideas about how to help our kids be more grateful, kind and compassionate make a lot of sense. She starts the book with the idea that love is most important and the key to all the other things we want to teach our kids. She bases her thoughts on Colossians 3:14, "Above all, clothe yourselves in love." In each chapter we learn about a new attitude/action such as love, gentleness, forgiveness, she even talks about helping our children love each other (sibling love). Above all in each topic she discusses she wants us to know it's our job as parents to model these behaviors for our children, because children see everything we do and hear everything we say. We can't just talk the talk, we have to walk the walk.
This book has some really good ideas to help our children focus on others instead of themselves. Sami has great insight when it comes to how we can help our kids become more compassionate and caring to everyone around them. I have really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to keep digging into all the things Sami has to say.
Thank you to Baker Books for the opportunity to review this book. A positive review was not required.
While I did enjoy reading this book, in all honesty, I found it to be more about common sense. I already know that in order to raise children who display the traits I wish for them to have, I must first display these traits for them to observe and learn. Children learn by example and it is our job as parents to present that example.. Cone does a great job going into detail about the 12 various traits we should display for our children (love, forgiveness, wisdom, humility, compassion, ect) and gives examples of how exactly we can show these traits to our kids. Each of these traits have their own dedicated chapters so if one was to want to work on one particular trait at a time, it would be easily managed.
I really liked Cone's writing style - she doesn't beat around the bush and is pretty straight forward but she is also very engaging and entertaining. While I didn't find any earth shattering revelations (maybe that just means I'm doing a better job that I originally thought at raising these kiddos), I did find it a great read and a great reminder as to what is important in raising kids of character.

In Raising Uncommon Kids, Sami Cone highlights twelve Biblical traits for families to work on. And by “work on,” she means parents have to do the hard work in themselves first. Ouch.
That truth is an eye-opener and a compelling reminder that my kids catch what I teach them through my own actions much more deeply than through my words. So, with that in mind, our family will be going through this book, chapter by chapter, doing the hard work of both understanding what each trait is and also putting it into practice through the practical application steps included in each chapter.
Twelve Biblical traits. Dealing with our hearts at home - Love, Harmony, Gentleness, and Bearing With. Our attitudes toward others - Forgiveness, Wisdom, Patience, and Kindness. And our influence in the world - Gratitude, Peace, Humility, and Compassion.
As we focus on looking like Jesus in these twelve areas, our family life will be richer and more meaningful, and our impact in our part of the world will be much more effective.
The world needs families who come alive together in the image of Christ. We are the picture of Jesus to the world around us. Let’s all grab this book together, and hopefully by this time next year, we’ll have hundreds of stories to tell about God’s faithfulness as we follow Him together.
