So I had read what's out there on Raissa -- a book on her life and work, a book on her life with Jacques, even the great new edition of her memoirs about their friendships. Yet she still eluded me, and I kept wondering about her -- her day to day life, her spiritual life. I even tried to find out if a new edition of her journal will be published, to no avail. When I came across a relatively inexpensive copy of her journal, I decided to go for it -- and what a good decision!

For people who do not understand the call to spend time in contemplative prayer, this book may not be helpful. For me, it brought it all to life -- the stresses, the strains, the relationships, the moves, the tragedies of the horrific wars of the 20th century -- and underlying it all, the faith in Catholic truth and the calling to silent prayer. When I finished reading, I missed Raissa. I feel gratitude to her and am inspired by her. Jacques knew that some of us would feel this way, and that's why he published this. Thanks be to God.

This work was published after her death against her wishes but with the insistance by friends upon her scholarary husband Jacques, that her words were too important to let die with her. She was a woman much admired by Thomas Merton as an example of one whose life modeled the true self.
