I don’t need to say much about The Ramones’ 1976 Sire debut that hasn’t already been said somewhere so, I’ll sum up. Whether you love it, hate it, or are indifferent, it is simply one of the most important and influential albums (and bands) of the last 40+ years. I am pretty sure Punk still would have happened without it (The Stooges and MC5 and others had already existed after all), but the music (and bands) that subsequently (and believe it or not - concurrently) came out of California and England would have certainly taken an altered path from what it did without the existence and inspiration of The Ramones. Sadly as of 2014 all four original members have died, you are all missed and Thank You dearly for your music. No Punk Collection is worth a crap without some early Ramones in it. As an aside, some would postulate that no Punk collection is worth a crap anyway and strangely without those people Punk would lose part of its reason to exist (no one to shock or offend); so, don’t worry about those folks they do somehow serve a purpose.

Rhino’s virtually noiseless 180gram vinyl re-issue of this classic is magnificent in terms of quality, and easily reveals the limitations and charms of the original recording and mix. This is no sonic spectacular to show off the capabilities of your sound system; it is about faithfully getting across the music in all its angst, joy, aggression, and fun. The band comes out of a wall of stereo sound with limited image specificity and variable instrumental placement (at least on my system), with Joey’s distinct vocals floating out front. I have never been overly happy with all of the instrumental tonalities as captured on the basic tracks, and that won’t change; but you can hear everything, it all serves the music well, and the raw emotion is truthfully captured; so, my complaints are indeed nit-picky and detract not at all from the overall viability and success of the recording. Also, Rhino wisely did not squash the mix with a compressor during the re-master. Let me assure those that have noticed that this is "just loud" this recording was never known for it's dynamic range (the difference between the softest sound and the loudest) It was always "loud" it is after all, unquestionably-- Punk Rock.

The album packaging is premium in nature, but fairly standard. The printing on the jacket and sleeve is a faithful reproduction of the originals on superior cardstock and glossy heavy weight paper. Included is a plastic-lined white paper inner sleeve, this appears to be anti-static as well; I felt no need to follow my usual practice of adding an extra aftermarket sleeve. Thank You Rhino for the care shown in all aspects of this re-release. Highly recommended, and as Rhino says, “Music the way it was meant to be heard: One side at a time”.

Suckers change again!

When I was 12, friends told me to buy records, they are better than 8-track tapes. I said, yeah, but I can't listen to records in my moms 1970 Dodge station wagon. Then my friends said, buy cassettes, they even added metal to the tape and it really pops. Okay. The CD's came out. My friends said, buy CD's they sound better than records. Records became obsolete. My friends said, buy records, they were always the one. NOT THIS TIME. I don't care. The Ramones CD sounds fine and the new Digipaks are neat. The purpose of marketing and advertising is to attract suckers and make them think that what you have to sell is better. It will change again. I'm done with it. Remember 45's. We had wars with those when I was kid. A brand LP when I was kid only cost about $3 or $4. Now they want over $40 at Target. Help yourself friends.

The music gets five stars, no question. This is one of the most vitally important albums in the history of rock n roll; it galvanized the sound of punk rock, it influenced tons of bands, breathed life and energy into an entire genre, motivated thousands of kids to grab an electric guitar (including me at 14) and to this day the Ramones debut is still just a super fun album. This particular review is to address the new remastering done by Craig Leon for the 40th anniversary re-release.

It's super loud.

That's basically it.

I compared it directly to my copy of the rhino deluxe cd they put out in the 2000's and the obvious difference is that the 2016 remaster is substantially louder. Granted, this was never an album of vast dynamic range, so the extra volume and the added compression that comes with it is not as detrimental to this album as it is to, say, "Exile on Main St," but still, the drums are now more compressed (it's very noticeable on the drums only parts of "Let's Dance") and there's a new, unpleasant, high frequency coming through on the guitars on "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which I'm guessing is also due to the raised volume spiking some of those levels.

I do wanna say that I'm not one of those "Loudness Wars" complainers who claim that this kind of thing automatically makes an album unlistenable. Thankfully the Ramones debut was sparse by design so the added volume doesn't kill the intent of the album (unlike "Exile on Main St" where the added volume and compression DID limit the breathing room between instruments and adversely affected the vibe of a record that pretty much needs the vibe left intact to work the way it should) and certainly doesn't make it unlistenable. But I do have to wonder why Craig Leon thought this is what the Ramones needed. This album already was a big awesome blast from the stereo, why make an enjoyably loud, in your face, album louder? This wasn't "Raw Power" with a sterile wimpy Bowie mix holding back raging music. Nothing about the production of Ramones debut hampered the power of the music in any way.

So that's it I guess. The album is really loud and a bit more compressed. It doesn't kill it, but I can't say it helps either. Again, this is a true, amazing, vital, superlative milestone in the world of rock. You SHOULD own this album. But if you have the Rhino version, you're not missing anything but unnecessary volume.
