Product Description

Rancho Deluxe [Blu-ray]

Before he was the Dude, Jeff Bridges portrayed another affable stoner: Jack McKee in director Frank Perry’s laid-back comedy Rancho Deluxe, which happily takes aim at the mythology of the Wild West. Bridges (Starman and The Big Lebowski) and Sam Waterston (The Killing Fields and TV’s Law & Order) are a pair of hippie cattle rustlers who draw the ire of a wealthy Montana ranch owner (Clifton James, Live and Let Die and Superman II) in this wild and unpredictable acid western penned by acclaimed novelist Tom McGuane (92 in the Shade and The Missouri Breaks). The main ensemble is rounded out by Elizabeth Ashley (Vampire’s Kiss) as the rancher’s bored wife, Harry Dean Stanton (Alien and Repo Man) and Richard Bright (the Godfather series) as their bumbling employees, and Slim Pickens (Dr. Strangelove and Blazing Saddles) as an ancient livestock detective tended to by his beautiful niece (Charlene Dallas, Cops and Robbers). In the supporting cast are cult icons Joe Spinell (Maniac) and Patti D’Arbanville (Bilitis). For Perry, this motley collection fits comfortably alongside the many oddballs and misfits who populate his diverse oeuvre, which includes films like The Swimmer, Last Summer, Play It as It Lays and Diary of a Mad Housewife. Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett provides the film’s rollicking song score and performs on camera in a nightclub sequence. The breathtaking Big Sky Country scenery, shot by cinematographer William A. Fraker (Bullitt and Rosemary’s Baby), looks more stunning than it has in decades in this world-premiere Blu-ray restoration of Rancho Deluxe.

Count me in as a perpetual fan. I've probably seen this movie more than any film other than the ones I've participated in.
Fun story, terrific social and comic writing, character creation, acting, etc....what's not to like? I agree with what one reviewer said of Slim Pickens. An amazing comic performance--exaggerated, yet incredibly subtle. I liked Clifton James so much that I later found out he spent some childhood years in Gladstone, Oregon, near where I grew up, so I looked him up for a couple of summers while he was visiting two sisters still living there and got to know him. Ditto with Charlene Dallas, whom I of course fell in love with and proceeded to befriend, and in the late '80s cast in Criminal Act, a lousy film I wrote (but didn't direct)--but she was good in it. I also got to meet Harry Dean Stanton, wonderful as well in the Rancho Deluxe, and got a song from the guitar player in his band, which I used for end titles in my first film, Love and Sex etc. (now on raindance.tv). Daniel Yost, co-writer, Drugstore Cowboy.

I had the pleasure of first viewing this movie on the college circuit. At the time it was released it was called a "sleeper," an otherwise great movie that did not attain mass appeal, what is called a "cult" movie.

It was released in 1975. This is a very "70's" movie, not much on special effects (in fact there are none), not much on plot (although there is one), but offering heaps of character development. When you will watch it again, as you will, it will be for the characters in this movie. Everyone is great in this movie, especially Slim Pickens and Clifton James.

Roger Ebert gave this film one and a half stars. Don't listen to him. Watch this movie instead and enjoy it for what it is, a little slice of life.

With its great lineup of stars, Jimmy Buffett cameo and soundtrack, and superlative Paradise Valley, Montana scenery, this movie is just fun from beginning to end. Yes, if you're sensitive to nudity, it has some so you may want to steer clear, but it's short and sweet on that count in any case. It's a pleasant investment of a couple of hours, including Slim Pickens' great turn as the antique stock detective. And how often do you get to see Sam Waterston doing comedy (well, OK, he was wonderful in Hopscotch as well, but he's a gem here!)? If you like Montana, if you like light-hearted cowboy movies, if you like to laugh, you'll like Rancho Deluxe.

There are just too many long, awkward silences in the dialogue, incongruous and implausible elements to the plot. It really seemed like it was left up to the cast to make up the story on the run once the camera started rolling. I love so many of the cast, it was almost worth watching, but not quite.

A wonderful reflection on the Montana ranch culture of the past, including Livingston and the Bozeman areas. The film has crisp dialogue and a surprise ending, along with some hillarious sexual innuendos. Though the film is forty years old, it still feels fresh. It is nice to see Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston as young men. But big beautfiful Montana topography is the star here. Plus the original score and live playing of the minstrel man, Jimmy Buffett is a gem.

2.0 out of 5 stars Schnarchiger Film auf miesem DVD release
Reviewed in Germany on November 28, 2010
Au weia. Eine Jugendsünde von Jeff Bridges. Furchtbar!

I wish he'd given a name that would give us something more to go on. I'd like him to have a handle so I could avoid what he loves. Some people just don't get 'romp' a fine little film, and I don't find it any more dated than Casablanca lets say.
