The first edition of this ready-reference encyclopedia for children ages 7-12 was reviewed here [RBB O 15 91]. It was originally compiled in Britain by Dorling Kindersley and has the lavish illustrations its books are known for. The revised edition has had more than 140 pages updated. For instance, there are maps and flags for the newly independent countries of the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Population figures have been updated. Additionally, the "Fact Finder" section at the end of the book reflects the election of Bill Clinton as president of the U.S.
On many pages, format and coverage remain unchanged. The book continues to favor European and British Commonwealth countries in terms of coverage. For example, New Zealand gets its own two-page spread while all of South America is covered in the same amount of space. While this type of book with its many "factoid" boxes tends to present information in a fragmented way, it also provides an attractive way for young children to begin researching topics.
