Discover the USA Today bestselling self-help memoir from a former Army Ranger, a hero of the 2012 Benghazi siege, and the subject of the book and movie 13 Hours, as he shares life-changing lessons of discipline, motivation, success, and peace.

Thousands of people have heard Kris "Tanto" Paronto speak about his experiences in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. But before he was a security contractor, Tanto was a US Army Ranger from 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. In
The Ranger Way, Tanto shares stories from his training experiences that played a role in his team's heroic response in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. Being a Ranger is, by design, not for everyone, but anyone can use the expectations and techniques of Ranger culture to achieve personal victory. Tanto shows you how to define your mission, set goals that are in alignment with your values, and develop a battle plan that will maximize your chances of success. You will learn why you should never quit and why that is different from never failing. Tanto uses his experiences in Basic and Ranger Training to explore how to deal with mistakes and disappointment like a leader, accept responsibility, and turn every obstacle into an opportunity for growth. You will learn why service and sacrifice will help you succeed-and how the power of humility, strength, faith, and brotherhood will sustain you on the road to accomplishing your mission.

A real honor

A real honor
After that devastating day of september 11, 2012, lot's of things began to fall apart for both the American people and the military. It ranged from political issues to the connection between the citizens and military. But it was Kris Paronto who managed to insight the truth to the public and inspire serviceman and veterans alike to continue our dedication to our country. I served in the Army for a few years right out of high school and understood the hardwork it takes to keeping America the land of the free. I may not have served a satisfying contract due to being discharged because of a duty connected injury, but I still do and always will remember my Army values and continue honor everyone who has served and those who still do. Kris is an inspiration to us all; in this book he explains his service and commitment and how he reminds us of what we stand for. Kris I have yet to meet you in person and I look forward to that day. I admire your book and teachings you provided for us, and everyone whether civilian or military should read this book as it reminds us of what we fight for.

Admittedly, it is almost impossible for me rate anything below 5 stars for our former spec ops guys. The sacrifices they make for us to be able to live our life never ceases to amaze and is the main reason I read as many as possible. But this book is a very simple and quick read and as another reviewer posted, its full of little gems.

Tanto has had a long career with the military and private contracting and this book sort of walks you through his life while relating it to civilian life. In a way, it is sort of a manual on how to be a gentleman and be a productive member of society. He relates civilian life to the Ranger Creed and how you can apply the lessons he learned into your own life. Tanto is very self deprecating throughout the book which I always appreciate because while I view all military personnel as heroes, they are still human just like us. There are many lessons presented throughout this book, such as goal setting and how it is always best to break goals down. He also does a great job of describing how often our mind practically begs us, implores us to quit but the body always has so much more to give. You will often hear spec op guys talk about how when your mind says you are done, you are really only 40% done.

This book reminds me a little of Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin except that Tanto uses the Benghazi incident, which many of us know as "13 hours", as a baseline for how his training prepared him. He explains an incident or example in Benghazi, then shows how the Ranger Creed prepared him for that and finally how that applies to life back in the states. There are not a lot of book written by recent Rangers (I recommend Outlaw Platoon if you like this one) so it also does a real nice job of showing just how demanding Ranger School is and how lucky we are to have these guys alongside the other Spec Ops groups.

Thanks for your service Tanto!

Kris Paronto has penned an extremely effective treatise on the combat mindset, and in a way that is concise, professional, and accurate. Doubtlessly, though, others with a more liberal mindset will disagree. Tanto himself addresses that he and other Veterans do not speak about conflict and threat based on things they've 'watched on TV or read on Twitter'... we speak from experience.
If you're looking for a re-hash of Benghazi, Tanto discusses it, but doesn't use that to define the book. There's already an excellent book on that.
What The Ranger Way brings to the table is that it's one man's view of how to succeed, in combat, and in life. This is an easy read, and a very good interpretation of the state of military conflict over the last 15 years. Tanto gives an honest assessment of himself and the principles, guided from his time in the 75th Ranger Regiment, that has helped him succeed as a human being. Without being overt, there are numerous little lessons he presents that anyone in the military (and I'd surmise anyone that's a member of a team) can learn and relate to. I've read dozens of books on the subject, including Stanley McChrystal's excellent My Share of the Task, and Pete Blaber's The Mission, The Men, and Me, and Paronto's book, perhaps because it's written by a tactical-level guy rather than a strategic-level guy, is far easier to digest. The Special Operations community has garnered considerable notoriety, with numerous books on SEALs, Rangers, Special Forces, Delta Force, and the like. Many of those once-obscure units are now household names, but of all of them, the organization that has achieved the most success in terms of number of successful operations, high-value targets captured/killed, and intelligence gathered is the 75th Ranger Regiment, not because they are the best or strongest or most elite, but because they more than any other unit make it a priority to do all the little stuff right. That is what Kris Paronto has captured in this book, and why it's worth a spot on anyone's bookshelf.

I ordered this book after hearing Chris "Tanto" Paranto interviewed on the "Order of Man" podcast. The author was one of the 4 GRS operators (out of 6) who survived the 13 hour assault in Libya on September 11th, 2012.

Chris Paranto uses the Ranger Creed and draws 10 "Wisdoms" from it to demonstrate how he has built his Code. He states that these wisdoms and codes helped him overcome being dismissed from the military (he had to do basic training and the Ranger indoctrination Program TWICE), overcome the failure of his first marriage and serve him throughout his life.

He is a flawed man and admits to that. He discusses his military career, training and faith in great detail.

I thought it was an easy read with excellent insight and practical advice.

Highly recommend to any military men out there or those interested in military service.

This book. Is an excellent read for hall who love the country e we live in. To know from those who lived through the Bengaucsie attack. This should break the hearts of those in barge. When the stand down order was given the here special forces ready to go in and save those in harms way, e they were ready to disregard that order, they were reviving calls to please come in and save us, you promised us you would come if we called for support. Then after two more delays they disobeyed orders and went to get the embassy people out. They were two late by this time, the Embassy was engulfed in fire, then were called back to the main base that was being overrun and in danger of all being lost . Everyone caught all night into the next day until they got things under control. For every young man and woman wanting to fight for our Great country's safety should read to know what it takes to get the training needed to stay alive. This will give you a feeling a strength and patriotism and also wanting justice for those who lost their lives fighting the evil going on in our high command of the enemies, & our own government where the stand down order came from. We all need to know what the young men go through to fight for our freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Motivational read filled with action-packed stories
Reviewed in Canada on November 9, 2023
I've been following Mr. Paronto for a while and I have watched many of his multiple interviews and public speaking engagements , that is why I was wanting to get his book until finally came out in Kindle format.
It's a relatively short book, where he narrates his upbringing, school and army years, and finally gruesome realities of the Ranger school training. In between he intercalates stories of Benghazi, his pals from the GRS Team, Ambassador Stevens, and of course the tragic events of the attack on the Consulate and CIA Annex.

I found it very gripping and fast paced, and action filled. Of course he ties life lessons learned to some of those life events, and it gives you ideas of how to apply those principles in your daily life. Even if you haven't heard of Mr Paronto, I would recommend this read to anyone who is looking to improve themselves and have a kick of extra motivation and purpose in life.
