I took so long to write this review because I already had some Kashmiri Mirchi powder that a friend brought back from India. (She bought the chillies and had them ground). Born and brought up in India, Kashmiri Chlli power is an oft used spice.

I opened this packet when my supply ran out and oh, what a sad let down. They have the gall to call this trash 'Kashmiri Mirchi ' What a joke. It has absolutely ZERO flavor, and even less color. Not even half a tablespoon added to a dish made the slightest bit of difference. Kashmiri Chillies are not very hot but they contribute a deep red color to what ever they are added to (similar to what Annato does).

Indian companies that sell such junk should be ashamed of themselves. But like, most of the rest of the world the only thing that counts is the bottom line. This is going in the garbage and hopefully I can find something a little better.

Ok, not the product's fault and technically there is a picture of the back of the package so it's on me for not zooming in to see, but note the significant allergy cross - contamination risk. Can't rate the flavor (can't eat it) but also can't return it. It's my frustration that is causing me to knock off a star. Who thinks chili powder might have wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds?

Must-Have Spice For Certain Recipes

I wanted to prepare a dish from my Rasika cookbook, and it called for deggi mirch. At first, I couldn't find it, either in local stores or here, so I looked up substitutions I could use. Many said to substitute cayenne, but then I went to the cookbook and it said to NEVER substitute cayenne for deggi mirch, that it had a different flavor profile. Ugh. But, lo and behold, when I ordered tamarind paste for the same recipe, this came up in my recommendations even though it hadn't appeared in my search. I ordered it right away. I'm glad I did. While it does have the spice of cayenne, it added great flavor to the dish.

The bag is not resealable, and it does contain enough spice to last for a while. I decided to store mine in a jelly jar to keep it both contained and fresh.

FINALLY, a I can make a decent vegan chili

I've never really been able to make a decent vegan chili. Here in the U.S. all chili powder has other ingredients added, mainly onion and garlic and I tend to not eat these as they are toxic to the body. I thought I would try again using this product and it was a resounding success. The soup base has a small amount of garlic and onions in it and no flavor of them comes thru so I will use it on occasions. Porcini mushroom powder can be used in its place but then doesn't taste like authentic chili. I won't be making this very often because of the onion/garlic addition but it is something I will very much look forward to....knowing that I can make it when the taste for a good warm chili arises on a cold day.

Here is my recipe: Cooked in the Instant Pot. 2 cups Beans, soaked overnight with the addition of 1 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar. Drain before putting in the IP. (I used Christmas Limas and Morados from Rancho Gordo)
2 TBS Vegetarian soup base - Vogue Cuisine Vegetable Soup base
1/2 tsp Kasmiri Chili. It you want a more overpowering taste of chili, add 1 tsp.
Asafetida - one half tsp
1 can 15oz. Organic tomato sauce
15 oz can Organic petite diced tomatoes
One quarter cup organic basmati rice
Water - cover beans, etc about 1/2inch
Cook on Soup (30min), let sit on warm for 2 hours
Note: I did not add additional salt. Salt will make beans tough. To me, it tasted quite good without adding any salt after it was cooked. If you do want a more salty taste, add after it is cooked, on the warm cycle.

I have been unable to order my favorite curry spice from my favorite source as their website says "not currently taking new orders". So, I used this chili powder to make my own Kashmiri curry seasoning. I love how curry tastes, but not a big fan of overly spicy dishes. . Making my own and using this amazing chilil powder gives me control over the heat I want in each dish I make. I also love the flavor of this chili powder. It isn't just hot, but has a nice, almost floral note.

What we found that most of them were way too "spicy hot" to our taste and too much for what we felt was the dish deserved. The Rani Kashmiri Chilli Powder was just the ticket. A wonderful, deep, "warm" chili flavor that was perfect for this dish. I highly recommend this. PS: I also used Rani's Garma Masala spice blend, and recommend that as well.
