Editorial Reviews
Review
“In her latest book, the Rape Recovery Handbook, Matsakis has again demonstrated a unique level of compassion and concern for rape victims and their capacity for healing. While guiding her reader gently through numerous exercises specially designed for maximum effect, Dr. Matsakis provides illumination into thought processes that often trap victims into believing that they are beyond hope. Gentle, empathetic advice, along with a sincere belief that rape victims can restore their self-esteem and become rap survivors living full, joyful lives, make this book indispensable to both victim and therapist alike!”

When I bought it I never imagined a time when I would look back on my assault as just an event in my life- not something that defined me.
This book, in combination with therapy, really helped me to move on from my assault and remove the pain and emotional hurt associated with the event.
This book was an important part of my recovery and I would recommend it to anyone. It is small, but the activities are thought-provoking and helped me to shift the blame from me to my rapist.
Good luck on your journey!
We still live in a male-oriented world after all the strides we've tried to take as women. That being said, rape is not taken as seriously as it should be by the whole legal and medical systems. There is much work to be done for future generations of women. As a woman, mother and parent I am outraged by the lack of seriousness taken by the "authorities" but without this becoming a diatribe let me just say that this book will begin to help heal the broken spirit of the victims of rape. Whether you are the victim or a loved one who is trying to help, this book will begin a dialoge at the very least.

There are better books out there.
Insightful, empowering and enabling to both rape/abuse victims and those
working with them in support services.
The book uses a cognitive behavioural approach which requires a lot of reflective thinking and writing so it will not suit those who don't like articulating their thoughts & feelings on paper. However if you are methodical and want to understand this subject from the rape survivors angle or want to get over any abuse experience yourself then this book is a must!
The book is also good for friends and family to read, so that they understand how the person is feeling, etc.
