Editorial Reviews

Review

Rittner and Roth have assembled a tool kit for activists and an informative alarm for general readers with this collection of original essays by distinguished genocide scholars. An effective and affecting immediacy is achieved as each writer uses a particular document (interview, trial transcript) as a point of departure. -- Publisher's Weekly

From the Back Cover

Here is a volume that cries out to be read by everyone. It is filled with "texts of terror" that must be heard if the human community is truly to respond "Never again!" --Margaret A. Farley, Gilbert L. Stark Professor Emerita of Christian Ethics,  Yale University Divinity School

. . . One of the most nuanced, illuminating, and grimly engaging volumes on rape and mass violence yet published. -- Adam Jones, Executive Director, Gendercide Watch, Author, Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction

Carol Rittner and John K. Roth have brought together a range of very powerful contributions on rape in war and genocide . . . Each chapter deals very personally with the agony of rape and the challenges it poses to male behavior, international law, and political action. -- Hugo Slim, Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict, University of Oxford, Author, Killing Civilians: Method, Madness and Morality in War

Resist the urge to put this book down. It . . . calls us to listen to the living and the dead, to their words and their silence. -- Doris L. Bergen, Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Professor of Holocaust Studies, University of Toronto, Author, War and Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust

This is the perfect book for anyone doing gender studies especially GBV and war rape. Clear, precise and easy to understand. I would highly recommend this book as a part of library collection to anyone who is serious about this type of study. Seller is highly recommended.

I picked up this book after watching a war film that seemed to trivialize rape. Each page delivered a new and shocking revelation. The abuse and torture that women (and to a smaller degree, men) have faced and are facing today is a massive human rights abuse. Most shaking and emotional are the eyewitness and first person accounts of these atrocities.

The authors did a great job identifying a number of different genocides. This was great for me, looking to get a broad understanding of rape-as-policy in war and genocide. It can be graphic at times, but I feel it's necessary to get the full understanding of what happens when rape is used during war.

The issue of rape as an instrument of war and violence against women is a critical issue that needs serious and immediate attention. John Roth, Rittner and Paragon are to be applauded for producing this volume with content that informs, engages and awakens us to the shameful and horrific history of such in humane violence. A must read for academics, diplomats, government leaders, activists and anyone seriously concerned about human rights, and exposing the moral attrocities that have been too often hidden and under-reported.
