JABRIL is a TOP PICK!(January 2010) A strong heroine, a sensual vampire and a menacing villain, evil in every sense of the word -- it doesn't get much better than this second installment in the Vampires in America series. Readers will have a tough time closing the book on this riveting story. Reynolds' complex mythology includes eight vampire lords who control North America. A top-notch series! --Romantic Times Book Reviews
"Smart, suspenseful and sexy. D. B. Reynolds' characters linger long after the last page." --Kelley Armstrong (NYT bestselling Author of the Otherworld series)
"D. B. Reynolds' debut novel is a fast-paced story full of dark power and rough primal action that'll keep you up late at night turning the pages. Her characters are genuine and damned likable, flaws and all. I fell in love with Cyn--tough, cool, and smart. I can't wait to journey with Cyn once more into her world of moonlight investigations, brooding vampires, and mystery." --Adrian Phoenix (author of A Rush of Wings and In the Blood

FOUR TOMBSTONES! Full of ruthless vampires, the story depicts an interesting society reminiscent of feudal lords. Raphael rules his territory like a king, adding to the mystique the vampires hold for the human population in the book. Major points go to Reynolds for creating a tough female protagonist who saves herself rather than waiting for the guy to arrive. Abandoned by her mother and basically ignored by her father, Cyn grew up in, as she describes it, "a virtual emotional vacuum" (Ch.24), and the resulting toughness in her character feels real to the reader. Suspenseful and action-packed, Raphael, while providing closure of some plotlines, leaves the door open for the sequel to which this reviewer looks forward. -- BITTEN BY BOOKS

The characters of Cyn and Raphael are complex and absolutely not cookie cutter in any way shape or form. Cyn is strong and smart as the day is long. She has father issues and the half sister from hell. And oh yes, she’s not about to let a vampire tell her what to do! Raphael is very old, very handsome, and one of the strongest vampires in the world. He is used to being in power and demands respect and loyalty from all vampires that he rules over. He lives with heavy security that follows him at all times, but that doesn’t help him when he gets thrown for a loop by Cyn.
I really enjoyed the world building in particular in this story. At first when the story goes back in time, I was not sure if I wanted the story line to move that way. I was wrong, and the information we get when Raphael’s past is shown, was both needed and fascinating. It only goes back in time a few times and is mainly written in the present. The story is told from both main characters perspectives, which really worked for me.
I would like to know where these books have been hiding from me. I had never even heard of them until one of the blogs I follow did an interview with the author. I immediately bought and read this one, and have every intention reading the next one as soon as possible. This is not a “pretty” vampire book. It was gritty, bloody, sensual, and dangerous. These vampires don’t glitter, but they do have powers and are strong, and they are very, very fast. There’s lot of action, death, betrayal, and Cyn gets injured more then once-including her heart. Of course it’s a romance, but it sure isn’t an easy romance.
If I had one thing to say that bothered me about this book, I would have to say it was the cliffhanger. I am not a fan, but for some reason-maybe because I have every intention of reading the next book and soon, it didn’t bother me that much. I highly recommend this well written book to adult paranormal romance fans and people that love vampire books.(RabidReads.com)
Like many readers, I am always on the lookout for a new author who rises above the mundane and creates stories that pull you in.
Based on the reviews and the first couple chapters in the book, I thought I had found a treasure. With a strong female lead and interesting premise, I was hooked.
Then the storyline seemed to go sideways. A lot if energy was put into creating the bitter half-sister and some major damage could have been done to our heroine's reputation with the vampire community. Instead the incident was solved with something akin to "shoo". So why bother?
There could have been a lot more interaction between our heroine and alpha vamp. We have only a partial explanation of why he keeps pulling back emotionally and then the ending fizzles with a cliff hanger.
I like the book enough to see what the second installment will be Luke, but can't help feeling a little disappointed.
I loved Cyn. She is a strong woman while still feminine, able to take out the bad guys while wearing her favorite expensive boots. She's also smart, a trait which Raphael finds irresistible. Raphael is the dark, alpha male, somewhat typical in these type of books, but still very attractive.
The story is great as Cyn works her contacts to find the missing woman. I was surprised that the story centered on Cyn, but I also really liked that. I wasn't prepared for the cliff-hanger ending, but I got the next book right away because this is a great series.
Terrific chemistry between Cyn and Raphael. I thought that this was entertaining and enjoyed every bit of how the story unfolded. I wish there was no cliffhanger, which is not a major one more a to be continued type. Checking out the next book.
