The one thing you need to go with it is a serrated knife so it catches on the smooth fruit/veggie surface. A smooth knife doesn't work as well.
First onion on I knew this was a good idea, but a flawed product. Why?? You cannot see what you are cutting because the lid blocks your view. So you find yourself having to bend down to see under the lid, until you get a kink in your neck.
My suggestion would be a vertical slicer, just like you are when you are actually slicing. Or just do what I have started doing, place a large serving fork through the middle of an onion (or any vegetables or fruit needing sliced), about half way in, leaving half the openings of the fork for your knife to pass through, turn it until the fork is horizontal, so you can see through the fork prongs. The fork will hold the vegetable while you slice the desired width off both sides, then finish the center by running the knife between the fork openings. No more hand knicks.
Finally, another use for my big turkey fork, instead of just Thanksgiving.
