Product Description

The Giant Dutchman's Pipe Vine Plant (Aristolochia gigantea) is one of the most outrageous flowers in the world, this species from Brazil is huge--over ten inches in length. Each flower displays an intricate pattern of white and mottled reddish brown. The mouth is ringed in black and has a center of golden yellow. Draw close to it and smell its lemon scent. As a climbing vine, it displays well on a trellis or stake. Or, with a little training, it can be contained to a limited space, such as a hanging basket. Hardy in Zone 10 and higher. Full or partial sun, grows to 1-3 in container, vining in habit, minimum temperature 60 , blooms in spring, summer and fall. In colder regions it can be grown outdoors in the summer and brought indoors as a house plant in the winter.

Many people plant Pipevine as a host plant for the beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail but this species of Pipevine--Aristolochia Giantia--is native to South America and actually toxic to Pipevine Swallowtail larvae that eat the leaves. Many gardners here in Texas found this out the hard way. Best to find native plant varieties when the goal is to help propogate local species.

I love Hirt's but vine was not the healthiest..yellow..brown spotted brittle leaves..I have recently transplanted with a trellis and seems to be recovering ok. Fast shipping..packaged well..will order again without hesitation. I have always received impeccable plants and products from Hirt's..unfortunately not this time.

The Plants came to me in good condition. I was so pleased how they were packed to protect them. I was really afraid of ordering plants that had to be shipped to me. I followed the directions carefully and planted them as instructed. I already had a special place in mind, so without further ado I planted them. They have not wilted at all, flourishing and climbing the Trellis I already had in place for them. It is amazing to see how much they climb each day. I am waiting to see as they mature and cannot hardly wait to get a peak at the beautiful, unusual blooms. I pray it is this year that I get to see them. Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity to get this unusual plant, at a good price. I will feel secure in ordering other items since these have done so well. Thanks again!!!!

The shipping was fast. Heater pack was DOA upon arrival. Plant was pathetic. A stick three inches long with four 2" half dead leaves and two were cut in half!. I'm in Florida and we have growing season all year long. Wife is great with plants and has it in her plant ER room as I type. She said its a 39% percent chance of survival. We have not called the priest yet for final blessings to plant heaven.I think I wasted my money.
Update: plant did not survive. Contacted seller and they refunded a portion of the price for the plant. Not the shipping. Buyer beware.

Plant arrived very quickly and was packed with an amazing "warm pack" due to the cold weather in the shippers area. Unfortunately the plant is not doing well at all - I am hoping it will snap out of its doldrums and suddenly come to life, but I fear it will not.

I got this for my husband because his grandma had one when he was little and he wanted one. I missed the part about it being a foot big. They are beautiful, and really an amazing plant. The problem is that it has taken over our fence and is growing into a tree we have.It really spreads out. So we will be cutting it back to ground this winter and hope it comes back. I would buy from them again.

This plant died after a couple of weeks, but it may have been from the extreme heat in our area. I can't really tell if it would have been a good plant. Shipping and condition upon arrival were fine.

I've had this plant almost a year now it it's grown out so much since the little twig that came in. Its still a bit early to see any blooms still, and it is December, but I expect to have this little girl for some time. 5 stars well deserved.
