Picked up the Pi 4 to use as a pihole DNS sinkhole on my home network. I was surprised at how very small the device is. And was equally surprised at how easy it was to install the software and get it up on my network. There was plenty of room in my network enclosure to add the Pi and its associated cables. There's been no sign of it overheating in the space. It was important to have steady hands to get the heatsinks aligned properly. Configuring network settings and domain lists was not necessarily simple, but to be fair that has nothing to do with the qualities of the Raspberry Pi.

I am a Raspberry Pi hard user since the model 2B. Really like it to develop things in my lab, for electronics or to test micro services using Docker on headless Raspbian operating system.

Tip: If you are a headless user like me, now with the Raspberry Pi utility to flash the ROM on SD Card, you can define just before installation (in advanced settings) to automatically connect to wifi and enable ssh access at the first run on Raspberry Pi, a really good new feature!

In the attached picture, I am using it with the "GeeekPi Raspberry Pi 4 Case, Mini Tower Case with ICE Tower Cooler, Raspberry Pi UPS Plus Hat, 0.96 inch OLED Display, GPIO 1 to 2 Expansion Board for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B", so when I move the computer, dont need to shutdown and restart - its important for any computer system, that you dont cut the power without properly shutting down the system, or you can corrupt files.

Uso Raspberry Pi da quando è uscito sette anni fa, passando per tutti i vari modelli: ogni volta ne sono soddisfatto, inclusa questa!

(Se già conoscete RPi, saltate questa prima parte)
Questo piccolo computer ha i suoi punti di forza nel consumo ridotto, nel costo e soprattutto nell'immensa comunità di supporto. Può essere utilizzato come computer generico o per ospitare servizi casalinghi che devono sempre rimanere accesi (da torrent a server multimediale); offre il meglio di sé quando vi interessa interfacciarvi con l'hardware auto-costruito.
Nel pacco troverete solo la scheda; per renderlo operativo occorre una microSD (almeno 8 GB se volete l'interfaccia grafica, possibilmente veloce) ed un alimentatore USB-C, da 2-3 A. Non è strettamente necessario un dissipatore/ventolina, soprattutto se lo usate senza contenitore, cosa che consiglio. Potete collegarci ben due monitor HDMI anche 4k e tastiera/mouse USB, ma personalmente lo uso quasi esclusivamente in modalità headless (senza monitor/tastiera/mouse). Come sistema operativo l’unico al momento compatibile sembra Rasbian Buster, ma ne seguiranno molti altri, come sempre successo.

(per chi usa già RPi)
Questa versione 4 è il potenziamento della precedente anche se stavolta alcuni aspetti sono a mio parere un miglioramento sostanziale. Cosa è cambiato:
* La rivoluzione è (finalmente!) l’incremento della RAM: esiste in tre versioni, da 1, 2 e 4 GB. Purtroppo l’ultima non è ancora disponibile su Amazon.it e praticamente esaurita ovunque. Mi sono dovuto accontentare della versione da 2 GB e nel frattempo ho prenotato anche una 4 GB sul sito Melopero.com, esaurito e disponibilità tra un mese.
* La rete ora è davvero da 1 Gbit/s; la versione precedente lo era solo sulla carta e non andava oltre i 300 Mbit/s, ora arriva a 950 Mbit/s (testata con iperf)
* Arriva USB3, cosa che permette di usare decentemente un SSD “esterno”.
* L'aumento di prestazioni è significativo, non tanto per il piccolo aumento del clock, quanto per la diversa architettura del processore. In rete trovate i numeri; all’atto pratico anche la mia versione da 2 GB è davvero usabile come PC, decisamente meglio del 3B+.
* Possibilità di doppio monitor, anche da 4k (e anche a 60 Hz, se ne usate solo uno). Non penso sfrutterò la cosa (in genere lo uso senza monitor), ma apre possibilità interessanti

Non tutto è oro, ovviamente:
* Buster (l’unica versione di Raspbian compatibile) è a mio parere ancora un po’ acerba
* Qualche ulteriore rischio di surriscaldamento. Per ora (e fa caldo!) lo sto usando aperto e senza alcun dissipatore, ma siamo al limite. L’unica temperatura critica l’ho rilevata collegando un monitor 4k@60Hz: in questo caso direi indispensabile un raffreddamento, anche abbastanza energico
* Serve un alimentatore di qualità (assorbe qualcosa più di 1 A a pieno carico e senza nulla di collegato, quindi meglio stare sui 2 o 3 A); usate un cavetto USB-C corto e di sufficiente diametro. Per i test consiglio "cpuburn" (da cercare in rete)
* Purtroppo il PoE continua ad essere una costosa opzione (peccato: sarebbe stato davvero utile!) Io ho preso questo
* Per chi già aveva una vecchia versione del Raspberry, serve qualche adattamento: cavo microHDMI, alimentatore USB-C, incompatibilità con i vecchi case… Per la micro-SD, se avete già fatto il passo dell’aggiornamento alla versione del 20 giugno (Raspbian 10 Buster), nessun problema; è invece incompatibile con tutte le precedenti versioni di Raspbian, con Windows 10 core e con praticamente tutti gli altri OS (escluso LiberELEC)

Come funziona:
* Perfetto per ospitare servizi, anche pesanti. Ho fatto un test con con un server web e database piuttosto pesanti su SSD USB-3 e direi assolutamente usabile! In questo il miglioramento di rete, RAM, USB e processore rispetto al 3B+ fanno davvero la differenza
* Buono come PC “normale”, anche nella versione da soli 2 GB che ho per il momento. Nulla di paragonabile ad un i7 o un Ryzen, ovviamente, ma le prestazioni sono migliori di quelle di alcuni PC entry-level (ma ad un costo ben diverso…). Appena metterò le mani su un 4 GB, immagino ulteriori, sostanziali, miglioramenti
* Sufficiente se volete usarlo come mediaplayer con un monitor 4k a 60Hz anche se in questo caso un box Android potrebbe essere una scelta migliore

Che dire: sta-consigliato! I difetti ovviamente ci sono, ma la RAM in più mette tutto il resto in secondo piano.

[Aggiornamento - 20 settembre 2019] Il prezzo delle varie versioni ora è allineato a quello ufficiale e quindi la scelta dipende solo dalle vostre esigenze. Per evitare fregature potete scegliere:
* La versione da 1 GB a 40-45 euro, incluse tasse e spedizione e per la sola scheda (non un "kit")
* Questa versione da 2 GB, a 50-55 euro
* La versione da 4 GB a circa 65 euro
* (purtroppo le versioni precedenti, più che sufficienti per una miriade di usi, ora sono fuori produzione ed hanno quindi assunto prezzi "da antiquariato" e non vale più la pena acquistarle, a meno di super-offerte sotto i 30 euro)

Wurde als kleine Media-Zentrale und Retro-Konsole angeschafft (Batocera V37). Dazu noch ein passendes Gehäuse und eine 256GB Micro-SD und nach etwa 3 Stunden Arbeit stand genau das vor mir, was ich haben wollte. Flüsterleise, stromsparend, für alle meine Anwendungszwecke ausreichend performant und das ganze auf Größe einer XL Zigarettenschachtel :)
Wahrscheinlich hätte es in meinem Fall auch die 2GB Variante getan aber was man hat, hat man und lieber haben und nicht brauchen als brauchen und nicht haben :)
Demnächst werde ich mich auch mal an einer Desktop-Installation versuchen und zusätzlich noch ein wenig mit Home Automation herumprobieren. Das schöne, einfach Micro-SD austauschen und schon kann der Anwendungszweck variieren. Ich mag den Pi :)
