Building something with robotics, or any project that doesn’t need Ethernet networking? The lightweight, low-power Raspberry Pi A+ might be a great fit. Smaller and lighter than the Raspberry Pi B+, on the A+ the mounting holes are in the same place as the B+, making swapping a B+ for an A+ really easy.
The A+, as the B+, is compatible with the new Hardware Attached on Top (HAT) standard for Raspberry Pi add-on boards - it has the same improved GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) as the B+. The outline of a Model A+ and a HAT board is identical, making an A+ with a HAT expansion board a sleek stack.The design is based around a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor and VideoCore IV GPU.
Smaller, thinner (only 12mm, limited by the low-profile USB port) and even less power-hungry than the B+, the A+ is considerably cheaper.

Raspberry Pi typically uses Linux kernel based operating systems. The Raspberry Pi does not come with a real-time clock; it cannot keep track of the time of day when not powered on. As alternatives, a program running on the Pi can get the time from a network time server or user input at boot time. A real-time clock (such as the DS1307) with battery backup can be added via the I²C interface.

This little board is going to be the heart of my Halloween and christmas lights. During the summer it will probably just be a security camera rig.
The model A+ is quite a bit smaller than the traditional Raspberry Pi so it's a wee more handy in that aspect. The lack of RAM doesn't really effect what I do with my Pi devices (Media clients, file servers, motion cameras and relay board control). If you plan on using this little guy as a desktop computer I highly suggest you squirt a little more cash at it and go with the Raspberry Pi 2.
Can't wait for the case and wifi adapter to make it so I can drag it out of my office and see how it likes the great out doors.
Raspbmc did have some trouble with Raspbmc Setting script every once in a while but it seemed alright to stream some video. My guess is my settings from my B+ are too high for it to handle. Might work better with a fresh install or lower overclock settings etc.. I used a wi-fi dongle and the XBMC Android app to test it. Nanny cam setting works great with camera module. I did have some problems with PiGlow script crashing every once in a while too but again it could be a settings problem.
Retropie was what I originally wanted to test with this. I wanted to make a simple game console for my nephew. Worked great for simple games but I didn't try anything past 8-bits. I changed the memory split to 128 and I noticed a difference in performance where the thumbnails and backgrounds wouldn't display properly so I switched it back to 256.
Raspbian booted up just fine. I didn't try much out on Raspbian other than Minecraft which worked no prob. I did try to load up the Pi Store but it never did fully load up. Probably since no network present? I know under the login settings I highlighted the option to remember me for offline use. I dunno. Camera worked great too. I took a couple snapshots to test it and was quite impressed. I could see the A+ making a great digital camera project. PiGlow worked on start up as usual. I have the binary clock script set to run as soon as the system starts.
Overall it's an excellent little brother to the B+. It can handle the OS that are most popular but does have it's limitations. Obviously this isn't going to replace a B+ in your home or office but it's a good suppliment to owning a B+ as well. I hope it provides my nephew plenty of entertainment!
It does fit in an Altoids tin if anyone wants to know! It will fit snugly with all ports unused but to access them is gonna take some cutting of pilot holes.
Its very comparable to the B+ with the obvious exclusions and the 256MB of RAM diff. Micro SD is much loved addition.
Anyone looking for a smaller, lighter and little less featured version of the B+ for projects will be pleased.
As for the Pi itself, working with an A+ is a little more challenging than the B+ or 2 B, given that it has only the one USB port. But using a USB hub I have handy, it wasn't too bad. Once I had gotten set up, it was a headless device anyway. The really low power consumption and the small form factor were key in my application.
I'm using this one for a solar powered time lapse project with the pi camera module. I don't have it out in the field just yet, but I've seen some projects running for long periods of time with older less power sipping pi models, and my tests look good so far, so I think this should work out well for me :-)
This thing is great for projects with low power and/or low processor needs (and maybe if a marginally smaller size helps?). If that's not what you're looking for, get the Raspberry Pi 2.
It is slower than newer models and has less memory, but unless you have sophisticated software needs, it works well for things like the GoPiGo robot vehicle. I would use only the newest model 2 for building something like a personal computer or multi-media server, but the Model A may actually be a better choice for a simple vehicle controller or other embedded system because of its smaller size and lower power consumption.
It might also be a good choice for any alternatively powered projects, such as a remote solar-powered camera or sensor.
