Editorial Reviews

RATED X is an exciting and fresh new band built around the talents of four heavy-hitters of American hard rock. Comprised of vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen), guitarist Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley), fretless-bass monster Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder, Whitesnake) and iconic drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Murder, King Kobra).

Appice was the first person who was called in to join JLT in the band, given the long history of friendship and musical camaraderie between the two. After a quick search, Tony Franklin soon agreed to be part of the band thus reuniting the rhythm section that was featured on the legendary debut album by Blue Murder. The last step was to find the right guitarist and who could be a better choice than long time Joe Lynn Turner collaborator, Karl Cochran; a flamboyant guitar player that can masterfully handle the Arena Rock style, with a Classic Hard Rock sensibility second to none.

With ties to some of heavy rock's most seminal bands Rainbow, Deep Purple, Blue Murder and Vanilla Fudge RATED X is the definition of a supergroup.

Joe Lynn Turner, Tony Franklin, Carmine Appice, and Karl Cochran. What could go wrong? Nothing apparently. This new colloborative effort really shines. You can hear the influences of Blue Murder, Deep Purple, Rainbow, and Whitesnake in the music. Still, it has a bit more of a pop feeling to it rather than straight on rock 'n' roll. The album is not an AOR masterpiece like Joe Lynn Turner's work on Sunstorm's "Emotional Fire" but it is not heavy duty hard rock/heavy metal either. It's smooth, it's polished, it's good. I hope they do more albums and this isn't just a one and we're done effort to make a few bucks.

Rated X is a great band and album. Rated X musicians are former rainbow, deep purple and solo artists Joe Lynn Turner on Lead Vocals; drummer Carmine Appice from Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Carmine and the Rockers, Rod Stewart, Blue Murder, King Cobra and more, bassist Tony Franklin who is best known for his work on the fretless bass guitar with Roy Harper, The Firm, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, John Sykes' Blue Murder, David Gilmour, Kate Bush, Whitesnake, and most recently with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. and great guitarist Karl Cochran who has work with many big names in the music biz such as Corky Lang (Mountain), Felix Pappalardi (Cream), jazz great Ricky Sebastian, Eric Singer (Black Sabbath, Brian May of Queen), Bob Daisley (Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Ozzy Osborne) Matt Abbs (Government Mule), legendary engineer Dave Whitman, and many more.

The Tracks are:
‘Get Back My Crown’
‘This Is Who I Am’
‘Fire and Ice’
‘I Don’t Cry No More’
‘Lhasa; Devil In Disguise’
‘You Are the Music’
‘Peace of Mind’
‘Maybe Tonight’
‘On the Way to Paradise’
‘Our Love Is Not Over’
‘Stranger in Us All’

And they all rock, its really a classic hard rock sounds with a modern edge. You can hear influences from all the bands they come from, there is especially a blue murder vibe hear and Joe Lynn Truner is one of rock and rolls best singers. This album/CD rocks, its a must have and is one of he best releases of 2014.

Classic revisited. Only Carmine Appice and Tony Franklin could make this cd such a powerhouse of a performance. Music is not dead with these veteran rockers. The groove is good, not overly done, not too flashy and certainly not corny, especialy Lynn Turner. There are some really fantastic riff being heard throughout. Carmine seems to have stepped out of Cactus into these sessions.
This,by no means is rehashing of old washouts, these are in tip top form.

Hands down, best release of the year, for me

Available for pre-order since early September, I ordered this in anticipation of the eventual November 10th release date (here in the States) and looked forward to hearing something brand new from the legendary vocalist of Rainbow and Deep Purple - Joe Lynn Turner. I certainly was not disappointed either lyrically or in the overall musicianship.

It was apparent after listening to the recording a few times through, Rated X's music had a heavier and sometimes darker tone to it because of the presence of bassist, Tony Franklin and drummer, Carmine Appice in the lineup. This was especially apparent in some of the earlier tracks on the CD. In addition, Rated X also included just the right amount of melodic rock tracks (especially in the latter part of the CD). Nonetheless, this CD, ought not to be misconstrued as being just another 'pop' or a 'classic rock' album.

It's definitely a hard rock album, through and through.

So while I could easily hear and detect the obvious Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Blue Murder influences (thanks to the appearance of Messers. Turner, Franklin, and Appice) on this recording; I also heard a number of tracks which clearly represented the deep recording catalogs these musicians have released over their illustrious careers.

Take tracks like "Lhasa","Peace of Mind", and "Stranger In Us All", for example. Each of these tracks reminded me of Turner and Appice's time in the highly underrated band of the early 90s - Mother's Army. The track, "I Don't Cry No More", definitely reminded me of a track Turner could have easily recorded when he was in HTP ("Hughes Turner Project" back in the early 2000s).

Joe Lynn Turner has been around for quite some time in the rock n roll business, has been involved in many different bands, guitarists, musicians etcbut this debut Cd really is one fine piece of hard rocking music. They really put extra effort in writing some of the best rocking songs yo date in my opinion.Carmine Appice is one top notched drummer along with bassmaster Tony Franklin and rounding out with guitar player Karl Cochran.Could be nominated for 2014 debut album of the year! Buy it,you wont be disappointed!

I first heard of Rated X when it was rumored that Bruce Kulick was involved with the band. Unfortunately he was not able to commit to the project full time and he was replaced by Karl Cochran. Both guitarist have KISS connections so I was interested with either guitarist. Add Carmen Appice drums, Joe Lynn Turner vocals, Tony Franklin bass and you have a very talented group. Some people feel that Frontiers Records manufacture these all star type bands and there may be some truth to it. When you have a group like this of course it is going to be professional. Maybe lacking a little in the chemistry department. We will have to see if the band endures. Karl Cochran has been ill and cannot tour with the band so the chemistry may never have the best mix. This CD is still quite good.
