RATED X is an exciting and fresh new band built around the talents of four heavy-hitters of American hard rock. Comprised of vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen), guitarist Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley), fretless-bass monster Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder, Whitesnake) and iconic drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Murder, King Kobra).
Appice was the first person who was called in to join JLT in the band, given the long history of friendship and musical camaraderie between the two. After a quick search, Tony Franklin soon agreed to be part of the band thus reuniting the rhythm section that was featured on the legendary debut album by Blue Murder. The last step was to find the right guitarist and who could be a better choice than long time Joe Lynn Turner collaborator, Karl Cochran; a flamboyant guitar player that can masterfully handle the Arena Rock style, with a Classic Hard Rock sensibility second to none.
With ties to some of heavy rock's most seminal bands Rainbow, Deep Purple, Blue Murder and Vanilla Fudge RATED X is the definition of a supergroup.

And they all rock, its really a classic hard rock sounds with a modern edge. You can hear influences from all the bands they come from, there is especially a blue murder vibe hear and Joe Lynn Truner is one of rock and rolls best singers. This album/CD rocks, its a must have and is one of he best releases of 2014.
This,by no means is rehashing of old washouts, these are in tip top form.
Hands down, best release of the year, for me
It was apparent after listening to the recording a few times through, Rated X's music had a heavier and sometimes darker tone to it because of the presence of bassist, Tony Franklin and drummer, Carmine Appice in the lineup. This was especially apparent in some of the earlier tracks on the CD. In addition, Rated X also included just the right amount of melodic rock tracks (especially in the latter part of the CD). Nonetheless, this CD, ought not to be misconstrued as being just another 'pop' or a 'classic rock' album.
It's definitely a hard rock album, through and through.
So while I could easily hear and detect the obvious Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Blue Murder influences (thanks to the appearance of Messers. Turner, Franklin, and Appice) on this recording; I also heard a number of tracks which clearly represented the deep recording catalogs these musicians have released over their illustrious careers.
Take tracks like "Lhasa","Peace of Mind", and "Stranger In Us All", for example. Each of these tracks reminded me of Turner and Appice's time in the highly underrated band of the early 90s - Mother's Army. The track, "I Don't Cry No More", definitely reminded me of a track Turner could have easily recorded when he was in HTP ("Hughes Turner Project" back in the early 2000s). And with the inclusion of a track like, "This Is Who I Am", I could definitely hear Karl Cochran's unique guitar style projecting onto this recording, reminiscent of what I heard on his previous solo work, Voodooland (2004). Cochran to his credit, has come up with some amazing riffs while working alongside Joe Lynn Turner for a number of years, since 1997. The song that best describes my love for Karl's guitar genius is the epic, "Blood Red Sky", from Turner's last solo offering - Second Hand Life (2007).
It is also worth noting while this band is being promoted as a four-piece, Frontiers Records' Alessandro Del Vecchio does an excellent job playing keyboards on this CD and according to the CD liner notes, was quite involved in the writing and production, along with the rest of the band members, on many of the tracks listed on the CD.
In addition, guitarist Nikolo Kotzev (Brazen Abbot) also appeared on this recording, playing specifically on the tracks, "Our Love Is Not Over", "Peace of Mind", "Maybe Tonight", and "Stranger In Us All", due to a stroke (of the carotid artery) which had unfortunately befallen Karl on the morning of April 3, 2014 at his home in New Jersey. Karl had just played a gig with Flavor Flav And the Flave Tones (at the Iridium NYC), the previous night. According to his official Facebook Page, Karl is still recovering from this and at this date, benefit concerts have either been held or are going to be held in his honor (under the name "Rock'N'Recovery - A Benefit For Karl Cochran") to offset the ongoing medical expenses. In the meantime, Turner has mentioned in recent interviews that Nikolo Kotzev has been slated to handle the guitar duties (until Karl recovers fully) for Rated X, as the band embarks on tour, sometime in 2015.
Recommended tracks: "Get Back My Crown", "This Is Who I Am", "Fire And Ice", "Lhasa", "I Don't Cry No More", "You Are The Music", "Peace of Mind", "Maybe Tonight", and "Stranger In Us All".
My Friend Karl Cochran kicks butt and so does the rest of the band!! Awesome job and a GREAT rock & roll band. I hope to hear more from Rated X in the future.
