Terri-Ann’s text to Gabriel was brief: “Vinnie’s gone. Remember your promise?” Gabriel’s response was immediate. He called Terri-Ann and learned Vinnie was shot, then thrown out of a plane flying over the desert in South Texas. After landing in Texas, Gabriel begins his investigation which takes him from Texas to Cambodia and involves child-trafficking, bio-weapons and mass murder.
Author Andy Maslen takes his writing to a whole new level in this sixth book in the Gabriel Wolfe series. Just as Gabriel’s character shows greater maturity and emotional depth, so does Maslen’s prose. His evocative descriptions of the Texas desert and the various locations put the reader right among the sights and smells. The way he weaves past and present using history and ghosts is positively haunting (yes, pun intended). And it has become a hallmark of the series, as Gabriel is visited regularly by the ghosts of those he has lost. It speaks to his Chinese half and the spirituality he learned from his beloved mentor, Master Zhao
This is the best book of the series so far and it beautifully sets up the next path for Gabriel’s journey of self-fulfillment. Wonderful read!
Book # 6 in the ongoing saga of “Gabriel Wolfe” is not a read which one can pick up, begin reading and then put down and walk away from. It is a book which once started, one just continues reading, and reading and reading.
As in the past, Andy Maslen, the author, has continued to develop the character of “Gabriel Wolfe” as he has done in every offering since “Trigger Point” when “Gabriel Wolfe” first appeared (at the time of this writing 2/10/18 is available as an eBook on Amazon for $0.99 USD a considerable savings).
While there are a great deal of sequences in “Rattlesnake” it is not simply ‘action for actions sake’ type of book, as that gets a bit old quickly, but rather an extremely well thought out and plotted book. Each scenario leads to another, with the suspense building exponentially, and then when resolved begins to build again.
In regards to both proofreading and editing I found very few compared to some other very recent reads in the eBook realm (by other authors), but having said that there are a few which, in my opinion, should have been caught. Again however they were minor and really did not affect my enjoyment (just being honest here).
What did it need? Well. Call me “Old Fashioned” or “Behind the Times” but I feel every book needs “page numbers” regardless of whether it is a “print copy” or an “electronic eBook”, whether it’s in “Kindle Format” or “IOS Format”, it needs page numbers or it isn’t a “book”. Maps have “locations”, books have “page numbers”.
It is my opinion, based upon the reading of Mr. Maslen’s “Gabriel Wolfe” series that Andy Maslen as an author in the “thriller genre” ranks as a “Master Storyteller” right along with those “mainstream authors” whom we are always hearing about in the “New York Times”. Authors such as, David Baldacci; Lee Childs; Michael Connelly; Lincoln Child, etc.
I highly recommend this book as a great addition to the series and I “HIGHLY RECOMMEND” the entire series. I don’t believe you will be disappointed.
Thank you Andy Maslen for another step along the journey with “Gabriel Wolfe”. Write on…Write on!
A new reader can start anywhere in the Gabriel Wolfe series and enjoy the story, but doing so will probably make you want to start at the beginning to get all the background.
I am already looking forward to a new Gabriel adventure from Andy Maslen!
