Wren had been moved from the ICU.
Rhyllann Jones (Welsh) came to visit him quite often.
How did DI Derek Crombie think Wren was going to be?
What was Rhylann reading in the brochure?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written Celtic adventure book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Celtic adventure movie, animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. It started out with a bang & then fizzled out. To be continued. That said I will only rate it at 3/5 stars.

After Wren enlists his cousin, Rhyllann Jones, to help him escape from the hospital and go after the treasure, the game begins in earnest, culminating in a chase across the moors of Cornwall that I found eerily evocative of The Hound Of The Baskervilles. Whether it was worth it in the end, you'll naturally have to see for yourselves.
A Raucous Time (the title is an inside joke) is Ms. Hughes's second published novel, though this story predates the Celtic Cousins adventure A Ripple In Time. If you liked that one, you'll like this one, too. If you haven't read "Ripple" yet, you should--but it's not a prerequisite to reading "Raucous."
Ms. Hughes's engaging style carries the reader along swiftly--so swiftly, in fact, that if you get caught up in the current, you're in danger of missing something important. Every scene, no matter how seemingly mundane, contributes to the tale, and if, like me, you tend to skim at times, you do so at your peril. Take your time with this one. I think that when you're done, you'll agree with me that it was time well spent.
[Note: Americans who aren't Anglophiles may have some trouble with the British/Welsh terminology (natural to expect to encounter that, since the author's British and the main characters are Welsh), but perspicacious readers should be able to pick up enough context clues to get through without any problem. As with any self-published effort, it's impossible to get everything perfect with respect to the formatting: there are a (very) few minor glitches, primarily in paragraph indentation. "It's" and "its" have been reversed in a couple of places, and Ms. Hughes's method of dialogue attribution ("Here is some dialogue attribution." He said.), though widely used, isn't what I'm used to seeing. I mention these things only in the name of full disclosure. They do not affect the pacing or interfere with the storytelling, for which my friend Julia has a natural and undisputed gift.]
I particularly enjoyed the characterisation of Rhyllann and Wren, the two Celtic Cousins of the title. They are very different individuals but their relationship is very close and this is explored throughout the book. They share an overwhelming sense of loyalty to each other and this carries them through the challenges they have to overcome as the story unfolds.
However, the star of the novel must be Detective Inspector Crombie. This character's development and the intricacies of his relationship with Rhyllann and Wren is the backbone of the book. Taciturn, down-to-earth, idiosyncratic and courageous he joins the ranks of all the good fiction detectives as he aids and obstructs the Celtic Cousins in pursuit of their goals.
A Raucous Time is an enjoyable, light, escapist novel which would be absolutely ideal for chilly, winter evenings when you just want to get lost in a book.
