"Love is a blessing, not a curse. You just have to choose it." - Daphne

Although the story is only about 100 pages or so (maybe a bit more), Ravaged still read like a full length book in the series. As a fan of the Eternal Guardians series as a whole, I had no problem diving in and being sucked in from page 1. It could potentially be read as a standalone since enough detail is provided to bring a new reader up to speed, but I highly recommend reading the other books in the series for the wealth of history and background. And really, the Eternal Guardians books are a great read so why not experience them all!

Ari left the Argonauts and Argolea after experiencing a tragedy and has been living as a rogue in the human realm for the last 50 years. Zeus has had enough of Ari's mayhem and recruits a Siren in training to destroy him. Daphne sees her chance to achieve her dream and agrees- because really, who says no to Zeus?

When she finds herself inside Ari's stronghold and within striking distance of achieving her goal, she is rocked by one surprise after another. First, the man seems to be the equivalent of catnip to her for reasons she cannot figure out. Of course he is extremely sexy but she has not reacted to a male this way - ever. Second, everything she has been told by Zeus about Ari just doesn't seem to ring true. He is definitely intense but he is far from the killing machine she expected to encounter; he still carries out his duty to protect others and patrols with that purpose in mind. But the biggest surprise awaits when she is searching his room and finds information that makes her question everything she has been told for years.

4.5 stars--RAVAGED (Eternal Guardians 7.5) by Elisabeth Naughton is the latest installment in the 1001 Dark Nights novella series. This is rogue Argonaut warrior Ari (Aristokles), and nymph Daphne’s storyline. Elisabeth Naughton’s Eternal Guardians paranormal romance, fantasy series is based in Greek mythology, prophecy and history.

RAVAGED follows Daphne, a Siren in training, who has been tasked, by Zeus, to kill Aristokles. Ari currently lives in the human realm, and the stories reveal that Ari is a monster; a dark and dangerous rogue Argonaut, who out of revenge and grief following the murder of his first mate, tortures and kills the creatures responsible for her death-Sirens. Daphne, not quite a Siren, must seduce and destroy Aristokles before she is allowed entry in the Siren caste. What ensues is the building relationship between Ari and Daphne, and the revelation that Ari’s acts of murder and destruction are not of his making.

Fifty years earlier, Ari faked his own death, leaving his son Cerek, and the other Argonauts to grieve the loss of their father and friend. But Ari’s disappearance was self-imposed as he was unable to control the need to kill the Sirens whenever they were in his presence. Daphne’s presence will help Ari focus on the need, and with her help, Ari and Daphne will uncover the truth behind Ari’s uncontrolled murderous rage.

Although a novella, RAVAGED, is a complete story: we learn about Daphne’s background, Ari’s history, and the gods of Olympus who play with the fates of man and beast. Several of the Argonauts make a cameo appearance including their leader Theron, as well as Argonauts Demetrius, Gryphon, Phineus and Titus.

I admit that it’s been a while since I read one of the Eternal Guardians books, but I’m pretty sure you could read this as a standalone if need be. This short story throws you back into a world filled with mythology, curses, heroes, and romance. If you enjoy any of those things, this series is worth a shot.

We begin with Daphne, a nymph who is still trying desperately to become a siren. After losing her family at a young age, she is determined to make her own family out of the sirens, if she could only pass her last test. It seems like a blessing when Zeus assigns her a replacement task and guarantees her a spot in the sirens at its completion. With Zeus, however, things are rarely that straightforward. She’s just got to kill an Eternal Guardian who has been deemed a madman. Oh, and she’s got to seduce him, too. Zeus was a little weak on the rationale there, but I guess when you’re a god you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Ari went as far as faking his own death to make sure he was truly isolated in his new life. Plagued with blackouts and the murderous need to kill sirens he encounters, he is just trying to live out his days killing daemons. When he rescues the beguiling Daphne, he knows it will bring nothing but trouble. Somehow, though, Ari just can’t let go of his need to do good. The fact that she and he have an undeniable attraction might also have something to do with it.

There are revelations, reconnections, and the typical god backstabbing plays, and all of those things made this feel like a full length book instead of a short story. Usually short stories leave me a little unfulfilled, but this one really delivered.
