And smut there is, and Lawless certainly doesn’t make you wait for it. It’s hot. Very hot. Like “I’ll be in my bunk” hot. Woo! Elena is full-bodied and owns herself; Richard is muscled and trim-hipped and as besotted with her spirit as her flesh. These are lived-in people you want to spend time with in and out of bed.
In addition to the hot stuff, there’s a plot! It’s not complicated, but it’s sound and logical, and works with the setting — the gorgeous and much-adored Alaska. You can tell the author has lived there and that it’s dear to her heart from the detail and love in her descriptions. I could practically smell the trees and the crisp mountain air.
Even for a novella focused on smut, there are no wasted or flat characters. Tertiaries and walk-ons have color and diversity and facets. Sure, the villain practically twirls his mustache, but there’s still backstory and depth. The heroine is fierce and clever and independent, and shags the hero because SHE chooses to. At one point Richard notes that just because Elena invited him to her bed didn’t mean he was entitled to stay there — that it was her choice, and she could change her mind at any point — and he not only respects that but admires it. Granted that I haven’t read any romance novels in 15 years or so, but for me this was a refreshing attitude for this genre.
The author has done considerable research into Native American mythology for her stories under other names, and you can feel that knowledge and respect throughout. If you’re familiar with her work, you can sense the larger novel trying to peek out from those scenes, and frankly I wouldn’t mind seeing that story either. :)
A great read that was over too soon. I look forward to more Alaskan Totem Shifter romances from Murphy Lawless!
And to top it off the story is tight, well paced after-dinner, read-in-one-sitting length.
Bring on the next installment!
