Oh, and did I mention mashup? If you've read Gemstone, you'll meet a familiar character here!
This short but quite powerfully thought provoking story manages to be a fictional journey, and a lesson, all-in-one. I have long wondered how D/s fiction in particular could be so...unfair to Dominants, in that it most frequently portrays them as faultless uber-beings with some genetic predisposition to omniscience and omnipotence; the Big O's, as it were...
Too. Much. Pressure!
I enjoyed seeing Raven misstep and recover. Watching her realize, and apologize and misstep again in her quest to be all that Alena needed, while filling her own heart and soul's needs as well. I enjoyed the reminder that submission is also a responsibility, and that any relationship, or at least any good relationship, is a two-way street. I enjoyed that a reality check could also be an engaging fictional story.
And as always, I enjoyed...and applaud...the integrity of the writing from Ms. Vitsky.
Trust is also a real issue just as the lack of communication. This could ruin the relationship. Alena must learn her boundaries. She is confused about her new feelings, confused about Raven. Has Raven the ability to guide, protect and discipline Alena or is Raven afraid of getting hurt again? This is an incredible well written story and intriguing and fascinating on so many levels. I like Alena but at the end I definitely loved Raven. Romance and spanking, an amazing combination. It was an absolutely pleasure to read this book and I highly recommend it.
While I enjoyed reading this book I thought it ended a little abruptly. I felt like there could be more, the relationship was just getting started and when I turned the page it was the epilogue. I was a little disappointed in the ending but I also know Ana will give us sequel soon.
Vitsky is unique in that her story lines focus on domme-sub relationships that revolve around spanking. The sex though, if there is any, is off-page. She explores the vulnerabilities from both points of view, focusing on character depth, dynamics, and intimacy.
This story is no different in that respect and I enjoyed it. It's an engaging, short two hour read where we're introduced to experienced Raven and newbie Alena. Both are interesting characters and have a natural chemistry.
Raven's Girl is somewhat different from the author's other stories in that a decent amount of conversation is through instant messaging. I didn't think this took away from the story but, if that's a peeve, then pick up another of Vitsky's works.
