I have done three of the Ravensburger Escape Puzzle series and this one I was dreading the most to do as thought it would be super difficult. But, oddly enough it was easier than the others in terms of putting it together. The colors on this one are vibrant and not muted like most. Now, don't get me wrong this is not an easy puzzle, in fact, none of the Ravensburger Escape puzzles are easy. The border is probably the hardest to assemble as sometimes the pieces fit together when they shouldn't thus makes it easy to do the border incorrectly which I did on this puzzle. I did reference an existing version online completed for reference when needed. But otherwise, these are fun puzzles that take patience and perseverance for sure. You have to go online to Ravenburger Support for this puzzle title (like you have to do for all of them) just search Ravensburger Submarine Escape Puzzle Support and it will ask you the question and you figure out each puzzle within the puzzle and it gives you options for hint 1, hint 2, hint 3 and then the answer to see if you are correct and how they came up with the answer or you can open the sealed envelope in the puzzle box that came with it. I have to admit out of all three Ravensburger Escape puzzles I have done (Witch Kitchen, Basement, and Submarine) the Submarine was the most difficult to solve in terms of the puzzles within it. Only downside is once you do an escape puzzle there really is no point in doing a normal puzzle again as these just keep it interesting.

Fun puzzle, slightly flawed by poor instructions

We had fun with this puzzle. As is common with these kind of things, first you do the puzzle, then you try to solve the mystery hidden in the puzzle picture. We usually try to compete puzzles without resorting to looking at the picture on the box, but found that challenging here and used the box picture. It's not quite the same as the actual finished puzzle but it's pretty close.

Then there's the mystery, and here's where I think a little extra explanation up front could really have improved people's experience with this thing. So, to help future puzzle solvers, I'm going to include a few pointers here. Some might consider the following information a mild spoiler, so if you're sensitive about such things, look away now! As far as I can tell, all the puzzles in this series use the same end mechanic, so you'll know this stuff anyway once you've done one successfully.

OK, so as soon as you start looking at the clues in the puzzle, you'll realize pretty quickly that the clues lead you to a particular set of puzzle pieces. So far, so good. But what to do with those pieces once you've found them? The instructions and even the hints on the Ravensburger website are silent, but you actually need to assemble the pieces into a little mini-puzzle. You're still not done though. Take the mini-puzzle and place it on top of the main puzzle. Then slide it around until it "fits". At that point the solution should be clear. All the reviews here that state that the solution piece doesn't fit into the mini-puzzle are correct,but that's not what you're supposed to do. It's NOT a manufacturing defect! Follow the above instructions and it'll all make sense...

Full disclosure, I didn't get this either until I read someone else's solution online... :)

Great Puzzle, OK Escape Room

This is the fourth Escape Puzzle that I have done and it was a welcomed improvement from the last couple I did. The image here is a lot more bright and colorful than a couple of the others I did, there are a lot of details that help distinguish one piece from another, and the math puzzles at the end were pretty clever if a little strange.

That said, in general, while I like the theme and idea, I'm still a little disappointed with the Escape part of the puzzles. There are about half a dozen hidden number problems that point you to specific edge pieces that come together for a big reveal. In every case, the final result felt like a letdown. In a couple of cases I accidentally found the solution before doing the numbers just by assembling the edge and seeing which pieces fit together. I was hoping that there would be a "hidden" image (e.g. a face is revealed in a bunch of wires) that you can't see when the pieces are separated. I have one more on my shelf, my fifth, and I'm not sure I would want to do another after that.

This puzzle was lots of fun to put together. It was challenging but never frustrating and was the usual Ravensburger high quality. As with all their escape puzzles the edge pieces are all interchangeable (part of the cryptic solve) so you definitely don't want to do the edge first. On the advice of others I put the edges together per my best guess but then put them off to the side. I added edge sections back in as I finished out an area. Solving the cryptic clues wasn't too hard. I needed hints on one of them which Ravensburger supplies on their website if you need it.

Puzzle harder than described

Fun activity in concept but product had a few flaws.
1) Some pieces were so close in appearance and fit in a number of places. More than once we had to redo the border when we realized two pieces actually belonged on the other side.
2) Puzzle escape clues didn’t always follow a rule that was easy to find without help. One clue I’m still not sure how I was supposed to know to read from right to left not left to right.
3) It was missing one piece that had the number for solution.
4) The end result was not explained. Directions didn’t say what to do with clue answers once finished to know what was correct. Once I opened the envelope, I realized what was supposed to happen but the whole group didn’t come to that conclusion by reading directions or clues.

Overall, fun puzzle but wish a little more thought had gone into directions to help understand the goal without having to look up hints to figure it. Also, they may need to proof their puzzles to make sure all solutions are on the puzzles as we were missing some which lead to a lot of confusion and frustration.

More expensive than other brand, but Ravensburger is really one of its kind from quality to creativity.
The “escape room” aspect in this puzzle is a bit questionable though. You can easily find the right pieces without solving all of the puzzles. And one of the puzzles is…well, let’s just say it doesn’t have the most logical answer.
The jigsaw puzzle aspect is excellent as always.
