The goal of San Juan is to accumulate the most victory points by the end of the game, which occurs when any player constructs 12 buildings in his estate. The buildings you construct are worth a range of victory points, with some buildings providing a varying amount of victory points depending on how well you meet their required conditions.
After players choose their roles certain actions become available. Every round, the starting player or Governor gets to choose a role to play (builder, producer, trader, prospector or councillor). Once every player has played the action associated with that role, the next player gets to select a role. This continues until every player has selected a role for the round. The starting player position then moves to the next player and the role selection begins again.
San Juan is an elegant card game version of the best-selling Puerto Rico economic strategy board game, bringing to life the commercialization and industrialization of this Caribbean town. The game is quick and intense, and the gameplay is straightforward enough for beginners, yet has enough depth to keep experienced players entertained. San Juan is ideal for anyone who likes economic strategy and role-drafting board games

A card game based on Puerto Rico. The pack of 110 cards consists of production buildings (indigo, sugar, tobacco, coffee, and silver) and violet buildings that grant special powers or extra victory points. Cards from the hand can be either built or used as money to build something else. Cards from the deck are used to represent goods produced by the production buildings, in which case they are left face-down. A seven-card hand limit is enforced once per round. This new edition of San Juan contains the additional buildings from the previously available expansion but not the event cards. It also contains a new building not previously available in any version: The Hut. This building grants a card when nothing was sold in the trader phase.

Each player selects a role (starting with the lead player). The roles give you certain perks on your turn. Then everyone carries out actions based on their roles and the cards they have acquired. The goal is to collect victory points by playing cards into your tableau. The game ends when one player has placed 12 cards and the builder phase ends.
There are various ways to collect victory points, so the game remains fresh. The player buys cards for their tableau by discarding cards in hand. This makes for some tough choices since hand size is limited at the start of each round. Some of the better cards are useless early on, but worth bundles of victory points in the end, others make building or collecting easier, but offer few victory points.
This is basically a variation of Puerto Rico, somewhat simplified, yet streamlined. It is great with two players, but fun with 2 - 4 (Puerto Rico needs 3 players to be properly enjoyed). It is a bit like Agricola Creatures vs Agricola (not dumbed down, just adjusted and streamlined for faster play and fewer players).
The lowest price (non Gold Box) I've seen is $22.50, though I paid $25... It is a solid game and one that will be a go to for many Euro gamers.
- Same great gameplay
- Adjusted a few cards (finally nurfed the production-building bonus card)
- Added new cards
- Over-all just not a very nice "looking" re-design, and I find it a little odd that they couldn't improve on the original.
- Still kept the confusing role names. "Production" <-- really? Just call it "Farmer" or "Planter" or anything else that doesn't sound like you should be getting cards in your hand. "Trader" <-- Just call it Seller because there is no trading in this game.
- Ditched the purple color for city buildings, and tweaked the production buildings colors such that its now significantly harder to distinguish at a glance.
Regarding the expansion cards: I do vehemently hate Guard Room as it's the only "Attack" card in the game, and if a player gets it out early, it can be devastating. I never play with it. I do love how Guild Hall was corrected, as it was too overpowered in the original. One card potentially generating 22 points, and consistently generating 10-12 in this game is insane.
