The movie was simply an extension of the last 3 seasons. The first 4 seasons of Ray Donovan were stellar. I was sure I had found a show to top The Sopranos and maybe even Breaking bad. No such luck. at Season 5 the entire series went sour, with more flashbacks than real time footage and a horrible plot. The first 4 Seasons played nothing but classic rock (anything 1979 and older) with great action and ingenuity of storytelling. The music was a great part of the show during those episodes. They took a huge slice of rock and roll, then did great covers on it. The characters were vibrant and realistic. At Season 5 it all changed, as if someone came in and said "You people are having too much fun with this show!". From then on it was one depressing episode after another. No more terrific music. Plots were nothing special and more of a lesson in psychiatry. this movie was just more of the same only more depressing. I gave it the third star only because they tied all the loose ends up, but not really. The ultimate bad guy from the series, (the Mayor) gets off without any punishment. They don't even bring him up in the movie. Moral of the show was "There are no good guys and everybody is a rat."

Overall, the series gives Liev Schrieber the stage to explore this emotionally repressed character whose love is all locked up. The Boston Irish mob fixation spins off of the Bulger mythology, but it borrows heavily from The Sopranos for plotlines and themes. The movie had to close things up as the last season's ending was up in the air. Mickey and Ray are flip sides of the family angst and trauma, the sister Bridget's suicide. It's good that Ray can forgive Mickey his sins of both omission and commission, but Bridget Ray's daughter polishes Mick off, just as Sullivan's daughter attempts to polish Ray off. Where Ray lands is up for grabs. But there's a lotta dead bodies to bury. Liev deserves a lot of credit for carrying Ray's unresolved misery around like dead weight. The intervention of the therapist who turns Ray in is the same deus ex machina used by The Sopranos. Only Ray doesn't die...he lives to grieve another day. Question is, after Abby, can he ever find love again? After Mickey, can the brothers ever find legitimate ways to live? Daryll is an exile. Bunchie may get his family back. Terry is struggling thru Parkinson's. Bridget is a widow. Mickey's dead after exhausting his 9 lives. But the line from both Kay in the Godfather and Carmella in The Sopranos..."All this must end"...pretty much resonates here. Crime of that murderous magnitude has no place to go but over. So over. Still, the back story cleans up a lot of the mystery as to what happened to make these guys so dangerous yet so fiercely loyal and enduring. 7 seasons and a movie ain't bad. The Sopranos only got 6. I give the movie kudos for having women finally avenge the first Bridget's suicide at the hands of a rapist and absentee father. Maybe Sullivan's daughter won't get the chance to do good in this world after she does time for Ray's attempted murder, though. As much as I hated the vulgarity, good series.

Dysfunctional relationship between Ray Donovan and his dad

I never watched the Ray Donovan series so I was a bit confused at the start of the movie. It played out through a series of flashbacks covering different time periods. The story ends up revolving around Donovan’s relationship with his messed up mobster dad. The things they did to each other was the best part of the film. It was like there was an original sin committed by one of them, then there was the payback but at the end they wanted absolution. What was a bit perplexing at first became clearer and clearer as Ray Donovan turned into a strong comment upon the dysfunctional ties between father and son.

So I just finished watching the whole series again and then found out there was a movie coming out. I was excited to see this. My review will be a little bit based off of literally watching every season and then straight to the Movie.

The first thing I noticed is that the COVID weight-gain had gotten to some of the characters. Liev looked a little like Kevin Bridges and I was expecting him to break into a Glaswegian accent. Then the guy playing the younger version of Micky Donovan looked like the love child of David Beckham, Gary Oldman, and Keanu Reeves. I found that funny!

I'm not always a big fan of the jumping back and forth between times, they did a lot of that in Season 7 so I wish they would've done less. However, that being said, it did tie up the loose ends, and that was probably why they did it.

I gave it four stars as I wanted a little bit more "kicking butt" and a little more pace. It is still a good movie and has that dark edge to it. They left it open for a sequel and maybe that would be a good way to give the show an "into the sunset" closure feel. Even though Voight was exceptional, his demise has been long overdue. What an actor though.

All in all a good movie. Bend it like Donovan!

It wasn't the best but I enjoyed the final season before then movie and was upset it was cancelled. The movie ties up the loose ends the best way it can. It wasn't safe but also didn't take risks which is ok. It even leaves it kind of open ended but SPOILER ALERT........

Without Voight the show isn't so great. And why WHY wouldn't Ray tell the woman "Oh I killed your dad because he raped my sister repeatedly and got her pregnant so she killed herself" instead of just beating around the bush and saying "I'm sorry" only. I think she would have understood things differently. But that's the problem every movie has a plot hole.

The final scene of Ray and Mickey was beautiful, years in the making. And you were wrong Ray. You apologized. He accepted. Hopefully the rest of the family finds peace.
