Product Description

The Ray Flash is a unique adapter for your hot-shoe flash unit designed to replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The Ray Flash is portable and lightweight, and has been designed to take advantage of a camera’s TTL metering capabilities.  Because the Ray Flash relies on the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables.  The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens.

COMPATIBLE WITH:
  • CANON 580EX II used on 5D, 40D, 30D, 20D, 10D

I hated the look of this compared to a real ringflash. The catch light (reflection in the model's eyes) was very ugly-it's a u shape and not round (and also too small). Using this device with any background other than a wall or backdrop just yields shots that look like a normal flash shot.

Considering that this is not really a flash or a light, but just a plastic adapter, and that you can get a real ringflash for not much more, the price on the Ray Flash is way too high. For say $100. it might be worth it as a toy to have in your bag for occasional use, but at $300., no way.

The Ray Flash is a great tool to have in your photography kit. I love using it to really create a unique look and even out the flash. The only cons are the build quailty is all plastic but if it were anything else it would be to heavy to mount so I can forgive that.

I use it with the 580ex and haven't had any issues.

I've included a few photos taken using it. You can see how even the light is spread throughout the portrait. It really is easy to use and easy to create a very unique look.

For close portrait shooting in a fluid situation this ring flash will give you a nicely diffused light. It will cost you a stop or 1.5 stops so you'll want to adjust accordingly. It feels a little rickety and looks strange but works fairly well.
