This was not a volume that I had to seek, it was suggested tome based on another readers recommendation after my reading of the last Chandler novel. I believed that I had read all of Chandler, but not so fast, how about imitators? Of course this is a memorial and an imitation. Since I had read all of Chandler, this perfectly topped off my experience. Thanks for the great read as well as the authors comments.

Well, I'm a devoted Chandler fan; so, I'll read anything that I can get with Philip Marlowe in it, and this book is one of those. The stories are usually very simple with only one twist. These are short stories that are not developed very much and are certainly not in Chandler's league. What I do like is simply Marlowe's personality. It's here, but it certainly doesn't measure up to the genius of Chandler's Marlowe. On, the other hand, any Marlowe, to me, is better than none. Some of the authors are better than other's at featuring a story with Philipe Marlowe. And, it's interesting to see how good a job each author's attempt can be. I just read these stories for quick Marlowe fixes between books, and not all at once, which I wouldn't recommend, because, overall, and all at once, they aren't good enough to keep your interest.

Raymond Chandler is my favorite author, and I read this book years ago but just recently bought it as a Kindle book. Some of the stories in this tribute volume are truer to Chandler's voice and spirit than others, but they're all enjoyable. I enjoyed the concept of following Philip Marlowe from the '30s through the '50s. "Gun Music" by Loren D. Estleman is arguably my favorite story here, closely followed by "Malibu Tag Team" by Jonathan Valin.

Definitely worth the very reasonable Kindle price to spend a little more time with my old pal, Philip Marlowe, again!

An absolutely great collection of stories in written by guest authors. Most are short enough to read in less than an hour. Some of them are fantastic, and nearly all are excellent tributes to Chandler's style and time. Two or three are so good, in the original Chandler sense, that it's a little scary. I am getting near the end of the catalog that Chandler wrote and that those who wrote about him have written, and it's a little depressing. This book is a huge lift to my spirits!

Raymond Chandler. Great characters. Philip Marlowe, the original hard-boiled detective, wonderful dialogue that probably wouldn't work at all today. I don't know why. I just can't see it in a Bosch book by Michael Connelly, or even John Sandford writing about Virgil Flowers. And on top of all that, a good story, plus the fascination of reading it from the perspective of someone writing in the 30s, who had no idea what the future held, thought World War I was the last one, never imagined cell phones, much less the internet. Not someone who sets his story in the 30s, but writes in the 21st century.

A fan of Raymond Chandler's who wishes there was more Raymond Chandler out there, I picked this up just to read something more about Philip Marlowe. These stories were written in homage to Chandler by established writers of the genre. Some work better than others, none equals the original. But they are fun and a few of the stories have delightful phrases that almost echo the pleasure one gets when reading the original. Definitely not a waste of a reader's time.

And by comparing the stories and the styles of the various authors, I was able to research the stories of the authors whose work I had enjoyed the most. One intriguing aspect of this book was the reflections by Chandler on how he had learned to be a mystery writer. So, it's beginning to look to me like anyone who is a good story teller, and is willing to learn proper style by studying Chandler and Hammett, has the potential to become a good mystery writer.
