I've been a flashlight hoarder for ages - it started years ago when I used to teach cave diving (SCUBA diving in caves) and shipwreck diving, when a good quality flashlight (and backups) could literally save your life. Later on when I was hiking and camping, especially in the different national parks in Utah, a few decent flashlights were also potential life savers. The sun sets really fast - it's like a light switch. On a moonless night it was impossible to see anything. Since then, I've always kept on the cutting edge of flashlights. It used to be Krypton bulbs and the Maglight was the standard. Streamlight, Maglight and others were the bright-light main-stream leaders. Times have changed. When the first LED's came out, I purchased a few - they still work, but are only a fraction of the power of this new generation of Cree LED's. Now almost every company that makes or ever made a flashlight makes Cree and standard LED flashlights. I always carry a couple (well, three) Cree LED's when on my urbex trips. Some manufacturers you may ignore make great lights - Rayovac, Coleman and others.

For under 30 bucks, there are three handheld, compact lights I'd look at. I purchased all three, and all are amazing. Since you're looking at this model light, you've probably looked at the other models as well. In the video I compare the following three models:

Remington High-Performance Tactical
Coleman Maxx/LED
Rayovac Roughneck

Beam type, features, size, etc.

A couple of things I did not mention or make clear in the video:

All three lights use a soft touch tail switch.
Remington: Three function, Bright/dim/dim flash - tap/soft touch to cycle, hold in for ½ second and release to turn off.
Coleman: is a single function, simple on/off.

I was excited to try out this Rayovac RNT3AAA-B Roughneck LED Flashlight because it advertises a '200 lumen' light output. My initial impression was quite positive: it produces a very bright beam for a tiny 3x AAA flashlight. However, in side-by-side comparison against my other LED flashlights, it soon becomes apparent that the luminosity of this Rayovoc Roughneck is nowhere near 200 lumens as claimed.

[LED Brightness]
- When compared against the MAGLITE XL50 3xAAA LED flashlight (rated at 104 lumen), the beam produced by the Roughneck is slightly dimmer
- When compared against the MAGLITE Mini 2xAA LED flashlight (rated 69 lumen), the Roughneck is significantly brighter.
(See my photos in 'Customer Images' section for beam shot comparisons)

The above suggests that the light output of Roughneck is closer to 100 lumen, instead of 200 as advertised. But of course, comparison of brightness is not a reliable measurement of the total flux output, because perceived brightness depends on how 'concentrated' is the flux (note that Brightness = Luminosity / Area )

I went to the source to find out the luminosity rating of the CREE XR-E LED used in the Roughneck. Based on official spec sheet by CREE, the LED with the highest flux output (Group R2, cool white) in this series can only produce 114 lumen of flux. So how can this Rayovac flashlight claim '200 lumen'?

I was quite happy with this Rayovac RNF4AA-B Roughneck LED Flashlight when I first received it. The unit looks and feels similar to a traditional 2x D-cell incandescent bulb flashlight, except that it is powered by four AA cells and is about 10 times brighter. Rayovac claims '120 lumens' of light output from this RoughNeck, which is even higher than that from my Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight.

Both the Roughneck 4xAA and Maglite 3xD flashlights offer adjustable beam.
- In side-by-side comparison, the Maglite gives a tighter, more focused beam in spot-light mode. But the Roughneck do appear to give out slightly more light overall.
- In flood-light mode, the Rayovac generates a much wider beam. Both flashlights have the same problem at the widest spread: the beam is a bright ring with a darker center inside.

First warning sign showed up when I tried to test the battery life of this Rayovac Roughneck. After 10 minutes of continuous operation, the reflector end becomes very warm and the LED flickers when shaked. As I measure the battery current, I was shocked to find out that the LED draws around 1.8A when powered by four fresh alkaline cells (6V total). This translates to over 10 Watts of power consumption! Even when powered by four rechargeable NiMH cells (5V total), the LED still consumes about 6W of power. See the "Input Power vs. Battery Voltage" chart I uploaded to 'Customer Images' section for details. Note that the Maglite maintains a constant power of 2W as long as battery voltage is above 3.6V.
