After our power was finally restored, I decided to put together an emergency kit for my wife and I for future unpredictable power outages. I want to be better prepared. I researched various lanterns and I ordered two of these Rayovac Sportsman Extreme SE3DLN lanterns from amazon.com based on the reviews. Got them for $18.99 each (I notice the amazon price fluctuates though). They just arrived in the mail today and so far I have to agree with the majority of reviews here. This thing is nice. I really wish it was made in the USA not China though, but anyway the lantern is rugged, compact, super bright, well designed, solid, durable and everything that you could possibly want from a battery operated lantern. I read about the many concerns getting the battery compartment closed but it was not a problem at all and was super easy. The physical size of the lantern is a bit smaller than I expected, but that certainly does not affect the brightness of this lantern. Clark Griswold (the king of exterior illumination) would love this thing :) All kidding aside, my advice is to not wait until a power outage to take action. Be well prepared. Get a couple of these lanterns now and keep some "D" batteries on hand in your house. The Rayovac lantern requires 3 "D" size batteries and the common "D" size batteries in particular, were also more difficult to find once everyone around here lost their electricity. Everyone went into "panic mode" and raided the battery isle at all the stores.
I would recommend this latter but again, screwing on the bottom can be a little challenging.
After I bought my first one my brother immediately wanted one, and then he had me order another for him, and then I got another one for me.
My brother also had me order 2 for the people down stairs from us.
When the electric power goes out, we have plenty of light.
We have never had any defects or problems from these lights. They always work.
They give more light than you would expect for a lantern of this size, which is smaller than your average lantern making it easy to carry along with you or to move it around.
If I'm just sitting around in the dark during a power failure I usually put it on the low setting to save power. Then If I have to get up to go to the kitchen or the bathroom I'll put it on it's high setting.
If these ever go bad I will be ordering more of them.
I bought this 5 yrs ago this last December. I lost it around the house for over a year. I just found it again (with the same batteries from about a year before I lost it), and it's just as bright as it's always been! Absolutely no corrosion!
This lantern/lamp is amazingly well made.
I love the ease of use, very low usage blinking led to find it in the dark, and its multiple uses. Several handy for camping. Ie. Lens cover off and upside down on its hook inside the tent, handle for holding while walking, good coverage set down on its large rugged rubber base for area light.
Ideal for camping or emergency power outages.
I'm an electrician and have owned many, but this is one of my favorites!
Though not as bright as our Coleman two mantle propane lanterns these are completely portable and do not get hot. I have about 4-6 of these and we use them as tent lights and additional table lighting for camping as well as emergency lighting.
Very durable so they're great for the kids to walk around with them if they had to.
I'll buy these until something better comes along but it's been a few years already and these are still the best option imho
Other than that it's a great lamp, can't really fault it.
