The surface (of the hard polycarbonate) is slightly textured, and whether that's because of the processing or manufacturing doesn't matter. What it does is make a very slick surface for the mouse to glide across. For example, I own a Razer Naga Trinity (which, coincidentally, I actually love using) weighs 4.2 oz. With a flick of my thumb, I can send that 4.2 oz gliding almost effortlessly across the surface. I realize that it sounds like you could lose control of the mouse on such a slick surface, but it's quite the opposite. It's fast, and when paired with a good sensor, accurate. This surface has actually improved my accuracy. The backing is rubberized, textured, and nearly completely non-slip. It moves, but very rarely, and only under duress. But that's not all.
Have you ever tried to really clean a cloth mousepad? If you've ever used one (and most of us have) and then looked at the heel of your hand, and noticed it was literally black, the cloth needed to be cleaned. But you can't stick a cloth mousepad in a washer, and hope it will survive. It doesn't go into a dishwasher either. That's hell on dishes, imagine what it would do to a cloth mousepad. But this isn't a cloth mousepad. A quick spray with glass cleaner on a microfiber towel (or paper) and a quick rubdown, and it's clean. No muss, no fuss. Even if it didn't have a USB cord to power the lights (I'll get to this in a bit), it's still one hell of a surface to run a mouse on. If you've gotten one (as another reviewer has) and it's begun to fade, I suspect user error rather than product malfunction. In my opinion, that particular mousepad looks like it's had a sander on it.
Now for the lights. Yes, they exist. Yes, they're programmable via Synapse 3 software.
They're incredibly understated. I have a dark surface on my desk. The lights just don't show up well enough to call it an LED mousepad, with the exception of the Razer logo in the corner, which can be individually programmed. From certain angles in the room, the lights are quite bright. But when you're sitting right next to it, with a nearly top-down view, they aren't visible. It would be nice if they used a clear bezel. That would have allowed the LEDs to be viewed from nearly any angle. As a result of a dark desktop, and no clear bezel, what I have can almost be called a 'warm glow' around the mousepad.
Here we are, at the point where I go into why there's a 4 star review instead of a 5 star. If lights didn't matter to you, you could spend $14.99, and get a SPHEX V2. That's what makes the lights a selling point, and that's why this mousepad is mildly overpriced for what it is. It's a damned good, durable, slick, accurate surface with understated lighting.
TLDR: OUTSTANDING! The most sensitive, response-inducing gaming mat I have used during 20 years of hard-core gaming. Kudos to Razer!
I am a former anti-Razer gamer. Bought their first gaming mouse and hated it and haven't bought another Razer product since, until now, despite Razer's vastly improved top-shelf reputation and popularity among gamers at all levels. This Razer Firefly may have made me a Razer convert.
I have been a hard-core gamer for over twenty years and have tried more supposedly high-performance hard and soft gaming mouse pads than Fido has Pups, and this Razer Firefly is without question the finest quality gaming mat by far that I have ever used. It's smooth yet has just a touch of traction that doesn't miss the slightest movement of your mouse. It does not slip on your desk or table, It is also very nicely sized and slim. I don't know what more you can say about a gaming mouse pad than it has a great feel, extreme responsiveness, sits firmly on your desk, and is perfectly sized and slim. Just by holding it you can tell that it's build qauality and materials are of extremely high quality.
About the LCDs :-)
Ok, I admit it, I thought the lights looked cool and they admitedly influenced my purchasing decision. But I had no idea how much nicer a black mouse pad with a ring of colored LCDs, if I chose to use them would appear on my desk. I use a Logitech G910 Orion Spark with backlit keys of any color you choose pluse a variety of changing multicolored patterned keyboard displays, a Roccat Kone XTD with a moving multi line of color-changing LCDs on each side. I now see how unnattractive a plain colored black mat appeared next to them. Now I sometimes find myself turning on a multicolored changing screen saver, turn on the multi-colored moving rainbow display on my keyboard, mouse, and Razer Flyer, throw in a touch of music and chill in a mesmerizing trance state:-) So much the better if your keyboard is also a Razer and you can synch the colors through Razer's Synapse. Downloading Razer Synapse from the Razer website is not required. Without Synapse it is strictly plug and play and displays a slowly changing colored boarder. Synapse gives you a host of additional options for the mousepad.

Naturally, I went online for user reviews and Youtube videos about the product and was at first thinking about replacing my old mouse pad but noticed people talking about speed and usability. They had a cloth Corsair on sale that was a gamer pad and being a cheaper option thought it would be a preferable contender but it wasn't.
Pros:
(1) Very Fast. My old blue Allsop mouse pad, while highly reviewed here on Amazon, is slow. I have dual 27" monitors; with the hard surface mouse pad, with the same amount of wrist movement, I can move the mouse arrow from the left side of monitor #1 all the way to the far right side of monitor #2. With my old cloth pad, at best I could only get the mouse across the length of one screen with more wrist movement. I suspect this would be a good pad for anyone in graphic design.
(2) A high priced gamer pad is surprisingly expensive, so in relative terms what I pad here on Amazon (which was less than the sale price of the box store), I felt it was worth it.
(3) Easy to clean. I watch a video comparing the cloth vs hard Razer Firefly keyboard (search Youtube "Razer FireFly Cloth vs Hard Edition Gaming Mat | Comparison by Beardedbob). I included a photo showing the difference how dirty the cloth can become vs the hard which need only a wipe.
(4) USB Cable - Yes it takes a USB port to run this thing. Not a big deal for me since I have a USB on my monitor it plugged into.
(1) Wear - I do have the question of how this thing will wear. Eventually the hard rough surface must buff smooth but time will tell.
(2) Large - While not huge like the Corsair I bought to compare, it does fit nicely on my desk and is not too intrusive. I would have preferred it a bit smaller, but the size is ok. I would not want it any bigger.
If you have a cloth mouse pad and a hard desk surface, try using the mouse on your desk. It will give you an idea how much faster your mouse will be. If you like the speed then this is the pad for you. (The mouse I use is a wireless M510 by Logitech and works amazing).
The mouse pad works amazing with my Razer Blackwidow Chroma V2 Keyboard with consistent lighting effects managed under one application which is nicer than a third party.
After having used the hardtop mouse pad for a couple days now, I can't imagine using the old cloth one again. It is taking some getting used because it is so fast and accurate.
Glad I made this purchase! Hope this review was helpful.

That said however, the lights are good for people like myself who spend a lot of time on the PC, and would be willing to spend the extra cash for aesthetic features. The lights have a brightness option, and the colours are vivid and deep, so it will look fantastic with virtually any desktop. For gamers, the Firefly can be set up with third-party configurations to illuminate in specific ways with games that you are playing, which can be useful for colour changing and blinking when attacks or abilities are primed, etc, whatever the game you play calls for.
For general use, I expected that the addition of lights would make the pad uncomfortably thick, but it is actually quite thin, and the beveled edges make it very comfortable on my wrist. The pad is plenty large enough for everything I use it for, and the underside is extremely grippy, and because the entire bottom is made of this material, I don't feel at all concerned about rubber feet falling off, like they did on my previous mouse pad.
In conclusion, the Firefly is quite expensive for a mouse pad, but if you use your computer extensively, and are interested in aesthetics as well as functionality, than this looks stunning and it functions better than any mouse pad I've ever used before.
