Dixon is a well crafted character who we only really develop a small sense of knowing. This is because much of what the story presents about him is false, and we know this as we see much of the story from his point of view.
Similarly we are given the inner thoughts of most of the characters, or at least a candid view of their motivations. Cotterill would very much be at home in an episode of The Sweeney from the 1970s or a film by Guy Ritchie, decades apart. Mrs Savidant is in some ways similar to Dixon in so far as her personality is a construct of her own design.
Katana however is an open book. There is nothing complicated about her drives and her needs. Again we see some of the action with her influence on the narration.
So we know truths when we see them but Michael is careful to reveal those truths in a measured way that keeps the reader involved. For one thing I was thrilled to half-recognise the device that Razorjack wants to recover – as I say you don’t need knowledge from the comics for this.
The themes in this novel include darker aspects of the Human psyche, sex, violence, greed, betrayal. There is not a great deal in the Human cast to endear them to the reader, however at the same time I felt a growing attachment. Katana is no less a negative character, though her frank approach to the brutality in this story makes her in some ways more acceptable than the dark side of Humanity.
A satisfying story with diverse and believable characters in a story that pits London criminals against an other-worldly female killing machine.
I knew nothing of the Razorjack universe but this book got me hooked straight away!
Do yourself a favour and read it! Well, scoot! Go get it... what are you waiting for?
The opening few chapters alternate between our world and that of Razorjack - a violent alien psychopath who‘s the worst boss since Alan Sugar. Razorjack has the not unreasonable plan of killing every living thing across all dimensions and hopes to achieve this by way of her ‘keyboxes’, mechanical devices that allow passage to all inhabited worlds.
Fortunately for us, the device allowing access to Earth malfunctioned allowing only a few warriors at a time to gain access to our world. To remedy this Razorjack charges her greatest warrior, Katana, with travelling to Earth and recovering the box so that it may be repaired and the full invasion can begin.
Meanwhile on Earth, small time gangster Kevin Dixon plans a scam that could net him millions from antique whiskey. When their paths cross can he and his gang outwit the most lethal warrior the planet has ever seen? and will the Earth be protected from the bloodthirsty hoards just a heartbeat away?
I really liked this fast paced and shocking thriller. Writer Michael Carroll must have eaten plenty of cheese late at night to come up with so many elaborate kills and deadly disfigurements.
It’s not just a gore fest however with plenty of laughs and some breathless chases across a horrified England.
Not for the easily shocked but certainly one for those of us who like our horror horrific and our thrills thrilling.
Even without knowledge of the comics, Double-Crossing serves as a perfect primer for the violent setting, one that conjures up imagery of Clive Barker's view of hell as well as elements of the mythos from H.P. Lovecraft.
It's a well-paced tale of the demonic crossing over into our mundane reality when the life of Kevin Dixon, a small time crook, crosses path with a supernaturally talented warrior. There's never a dull moment, and it has an ending that is crying out for a sequel. Despite the science fiction and horror elements, the characters are all well-rounded and thoroughly believable.
Thoroughly recommended - I raced through this in a phenomenally short space of time. Definitely for adult readers though, and not for the squeamish. Once I've got myself up to speed with the Razorjack universe, I hope Michael has another book in the wings...
