Sew a sustainable capsule wardrobe that is tailored to you – and with it, help break the cycle of throw-away fashion.
The fashion industry is the second biggest polluter of the environment on the planet. Every year, over 350,000 tonnes of clothing is sent to landfill in the UK – just under 14 million tonnes in the US – much of it owing to fast fashion.
Join the movement against throw-away fashion, and refashion once-loved clothing to create a sublime capsule wardrobe that is contemporary and classy.
We urgently need to find alternative, more sustainable approaches that allow us to have the stylish wardrobes we crave without hurting our planet. The techniques you learn in The Re:Fashion Wardrobe is one of those alternatives.
Learn how to alter or create entirely new garments from pre-loved clothes or forgotten fabrics that are not only chic but don't cost the earth.
Portia takes you step–by–step through a collection of 11 garments that she has reworked, showing you just how easy it is to refresh or change any piece of clothing you come across, including:
Button-front Skirt
Refitted Jeans
Boxy Tunic Shirt
T-shirt Dress
Every garment in the collection can be used to create a modern capsule wardrobe that you can wear throughout the year, and Portia has included advice on how to adjust the garments in the book to make versions suitable for different times of the year.

"Lawrie's breezy, can-do attitude is infectious. After all, how hard can it be to repurpose garments (owned or thrifted) to save the planet and pockets? For readers without sewing expertise, Lawrie advises at least getting familiar with the workings of a machine and its terminology. Her idea works: create 11 items of clothing—from boxy tunic shirt to duvet duster coat—that adhere to a color palette for mix-and-matchable potential. Upfront instructions couldn’t be more thorough and are well illustrated too: building the wardrobe, sourcing garments, and working with fabrics, haberdashery, and hardware. Directions for constructing each piece are thorough, filled with step-by-step photographs, tips and tricks (e.g., how to remove jean rivets), opportunities for creativity (like reverse the skirt design and put buttons on the back), and more. There’s even a bit of a photo runway, showing different combinations of garments. Best yet is Lawrie's information on techniques that go beyond pattern templates and her reminders that fitting (yes, self-measuring) is critical to buttons and holes, necklines and belts. No excuses!"— Barbara Jacobs
Library Journal Review By Nanette Donohue
"Refashioning—the act of taking discarded clothing or textiles and restyling them into a new piece—is an eco-conscious way to reuse items that may be out of style, slightly worn, or simply unwanted. Lawrie, who created the Refashioners challenge to encourage sewists to use reclaimed textiles for garment sewing, shares her extensive knowledge of sustainable sewing in this thoughtful guide. She encourages sewists to create a “capsule wardrobe,” a curated, practical collection of garments that are timeless and of good quality. There are several projects, from a simple sleeveless shift dress created from three T-shirts to a full-scale refitting of a pair of oversized blue jeans. Each activity includes step-by-step instructions with ample photographs, along with tips and tricks for sewing success. The aesthetic is generally minimalist, featuring loose-fitting, boxy garments in neutral colors, but sewists interested in experimenting with more fitted or embellished clothing can consult the techniques chapter for ideas on creating refashioned items that suit their personal style.
VERDICT Many sewists have an interest in sustainability and the environmental impact of fashion. This book provides thoughtful guidance for repurposing a variety of garments and textiles. Recommended for all sewing collections."
Biografía del autor
Essex maker, blogger and creator of The Refashioners, Portia sews, knits and has been a regular contributor to Simply Sewing magazine since it launched in 20015. She’s been writing her blog Makery (formerly Miss P) since 2009 and founded The Refashioners challenge, calling on bloggers to refashion a garment to highlight how cool, creative and ecologically sound refashioning old garments actually is. Portia’s sewing super power is creating easy-to-sew, accessible-for-all garments for Simply Sewing magazine, often with no pattern needed so the maker can draft them to their own measurements. She lists family, hazelnut lattes, Indian food and singing into hairbrushes as her loves. Find her on Instagram @portialawrie.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 30 de diciembre de 2023I'm not a die hard thrift shopper, but as someone who loves to sew, I am environmentally conscious and concerned about textile waste (including my own). This book really stood out to me because the clothes were very cool, minimal, and wearable similar to some Japanese sewing books. While the shapes or colors are not flashy, if flashy is your style, the author also talks about dyeing fabrics. If you want to customize with screen printing or embroidery, you could do that too. Those skills aren't covered in this book, but the shape of the garments are a great blank canvas for creativity. I appreciated these were not all quick slash and burn, shoddy re-fashions either. Some of these will take time to get them to look their best, and that's good, because it's also much more likely to get worn if the remake looks quality. The sewing tips were very well illustrated.
While I tend to enjoy overly-complicated sewing patterns that take way too much time to sew, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a minimal but far from boring base capsule wardrobe using garments or fabrics you already own or can source inexpensively.
I'm looking at my "mending" basket in a very different light now.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 5 de septiembre de 2023This is one of the best books I've read on sustainable sewing and upcycling. Things I love are that it includes a section on the reason to upcycle, along with great projects. There is even a whole section of techniques that a seamstress can apply to other projects. The projects are super stylish! I've been trying to tone down my wardrobe to create more of a capsule wardrobe. This book also touches on that topic! There is much to learn with this book! I highly recommend it!

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 20 de mayo de 2023I’m so glad I ordered this book! I’ve been sewing for about 8 years and am familiar with the author from her online presence. There’s nothing in here I wouldn’t try! All the makes in this book are modern designs that do no look like so many of the refashioned men’s shirts and jeans turned into a skirt you see online. As to the reviewer that complained that no one had 3 matching black tshirts of the same color - the author doesn’t expect you to either. That’s what fabric dye is for. Great book! Don’t hesitate to order!

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 5 de octubre de 2023The Re:Fashion Wardrobe is for the beginning sewist. It’s full of basic sewing techniques such as how to sew darts. Experienced sewists will also know the upcycling techniques such as how to take in seams, how to piece fabric, and how to take apart a garment and use it like new fabric. The styles and projects are very conservative, things like turning a simple cotton shirt into a simple crop top. Don’t expect any non-mainstream ideas from this book, such as boho or cottagecore. Don’t expect any high-fashion ideas either. It’s a great book for its audience: People who want to learn to sew basic styles using easy-to-handle, sustainable fabrics.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 20 de julio de 2023For those of you who like to sew, this is a great addition to your library. I got my copy this week (July 17, 2023) and I’ve already read it cover to cover 📖 👀 The first 17 pages alone are worth the price! In fact, yesterday I pulled out a linen shirt that I never wore because I hated the way the sleeves looked and refashioned it into a sleeveless shirt that will now be in heavy rotation.

Elle CCalificado en Canadá el 20 de marzo de 20235.0 de 5 estrellas The book that fills a gap in my sewing library
Love this book. Unlike most books about recycling/reusing existing garments to make new clothes, this book doesn't have 1 garment that I wouldn't want to wear. Everything is polished and most definitively wearable. I can't wait to get started. I have several shirts in my closet that are going under the knife.
