Every year, tons of clothing are sent to landfill, much of it owing to fast fashion and our desire to throw away clothes that aren’t considered 'fashionable'. In this book, learn how to alter or completely deconstruct once-loved clothes to create edited or entirely new garments and accessories that are not only chic but saving the planet.
- Beginning with advice on how to source and analyze existing clothes
- Founder of The Refashioners movement and sewing designer Portia Lawrie will then take you step by step through a collection of inspirational garments that she has reworked to show you just how easy it is to refresh and renew any piece of clothing you come across.
- In every project, accompanied by stage-by-stage photographs and invaluable tips, see how you can adapt and cut away at tops, trousers, dresses and more to build a stylish, modern capsule wardrobe that you can wear throughout the year.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2025Very informative, has actual items that have been made using old or wrong size garments.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2025Not as thorough as i wanted but it will do for beginners
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2023I'm not a die hard thrift shopper, but as someone who loves to sew, I am environmentally conscious and concerned about textile waste (including my own). This book really stood out to me because the clothes were very cool, minimal, and wearable similar to some Japanese sewing books. While the shapes or colors are not flashy, if flashy is your style, the author also talks about dyeing fabrics. If you want to customize with screen printing or embroidery, you could do that too. Those skills aren't covered in this book, but the shape of the garments are a great blank canvas for creativity. I appreciated these were not all quick slash and burn, shoddy re-fashions either. Some of these will take time to get them to look their best, and that's good, because it's also much more likely to get worn if the remake looks quality. The sewing tips were very well illustrated.
While I tend to enjoy overly-complicated sewing patterns that take way too much time to sew, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a minimal but far from boring base capsule wardrobe using garments or fabrics you already own or can source inexpensively.
I'm looking at my "mending" basket in a very different light now.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024The sewing ideas are fabulous, and instructions are easy-to-use. These are staple pieces needed in every wardrobe. I hope there are more like this.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023This is one of the best books I've read on sustainable sewing and upcycling. Things I love are that it includes a section on the reason to upcycle, along with great projects. There is even a whole section of techniques that a seamstress can apply to other projects. The projects are super stylish! I've been trying to tone down my wardrobe to create more of a capsule wardrobe. This book also touches on that topic! There is much to learn with this book! I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2023I’m so glad I ordered this book! I’ve been sewing for about 8 years and am familiar with the author from her online presence. There’s nothing in here I wouldn’t try! All the makes in this book are modern designs that do no look like so many of the refashioned men’s shirts and jeans turned into a skirt you see online. As to the reviewer that complained that no one had 3 matching black tshirts of the same color - the author doesn’t expect you to either. That’s what fabric dye is for. Great book! Don’t hesitate to order!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2023The Re:Fashion Wardrobe is for the beginning sewist. It’s full of basic sewing techniques such as how to sew darts. Experienced sewists will also know the upcycling techniques such as how to take in seams, how to piece fabric, and how to take apart a garment and use it like new fabric. The styles and projects are very conservative, things like turning a simple cotton shirt into a simple crop top. Don’t expect any non-mainstream ideas from this book, such as boho or cottagecore. Don’t expect any high-fashion ideas either. It’s a great book for its audience: People who want to learn to sew basic styles using easy-to-handle, sustainable fabrics.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2023For those of you who like to sew, this is a great addition to your library. I got my copy this week (July 17, 2023) and I’ve already read it cover to cover 📖 👀 The first 17 pages alone are worth the price! In fact, yesterday I pulled out a linen shirt that I never wore because I hated the way the sleeves looked and refashioned it into a sleeveless shirt that will now be in heavy rotation.

Elle CReviewed in Canada on March 20, 20235.0 out of 5 stars The book that fills a gap in my sewing library
Love this book. Unlike most books about recycling/reusing existing garments to make new clothes, this book doesn't have 1 garment that I wouldn't want to wear. Everything is polished and most definitively wearable. I can't wait to get started. I have several shirts in my closet that are going under the knife.
