This book started off as one thing and then ended up as something totally different. At first I thought "Okay, it's written in a rather immature voice, this Brad guy's a bit shallow but somewhat likeable... the story's rather predictable, and oh look, there's Brad getting all distracted by the hot chicks. I think I've read books like this before..."
But then about 2/3 of the way through a major plot twist and the book grew up fast. It became much more mature, gritty, and nuanced, and I couldn't pull myself away. It ended on a pretty good note... not a "riding off into the sunset" type ending, but hopeful... less than tragic. But overall, the story, it was tense and a bit tragic.
It has romance, it has a great message about love and acceptance, and oh my gosh this was an awesome book. Also there were no typos that I could find, which is a plus since I consider this to be an indie novel. I don't usually go for those but if you're looking for human/robot or human/AI stories you just have to take what you can get.
Why not 5 stars? Because nobody believes 5 star reviews. Anyhow the main character was pretty darn pathetic overall and the whole tone of the story started out a bit goofy and immature, and then went almost too dark. There was a lot of pain in there, but so much hope. I'm conflicted about what rating I should give it so I'm going to give a 5-star book a 4-star rating. Greg, if you're reading this, hats off to you sir, this was a great book.
[Edit] I kept thinking about it and I figured out why I couldn't give it 5 stars. The writing style was rather basic. It lacked wordplay or emotional texture. It was just raw, out there. I think for some people that would probably be considered a plus but for me, I love it when I'm reading something and it stops me in my tracks at a clever or witty observation, or a funny or moving piece of dialogue or description. I think if it had that, it would have given it more emotional depth and made it more intellectually satisfying as well. Maybe then the mopey, morose nature of the story and characters wouldn't have bothered me as much.
It's a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in robots, androids, or AI, for sure. I feel like my complaints are a bit nitpicky but there you have it.
