Overall Rating: 5 stars- Screw sleep! I’ll let the kids watch TV and eat hot dogs tomorrow.
Yes, that’s right. I’m giving a novella 5 Stars. Doesn’t happen often, but it’s worth it. Keep in mind, you can NOT read this novella without having read Normal. This really contains a collection of scenes from book 1 retold from Sam’s POV. There is nothing ground-breaking or new here in regards to the plot.
Since he’s pretty much the most awesome guy ever, it could have been a day in the life of Sam Caplan as he goes to school, chats with people, whatever. I’d still have read it and liked it. He’s Sam. I just want to be in his presence.
But getting a look at some of the more poignant moments from Normal from his perspective was awesome. Actually one of them (the Big One) was almost more awful than it was the first time, and that’s saying something. Sam’s guilt just tore me up.
Really, this isn’t really a review. This is gushing. It’s Sam. I loved it. Normal is an awesome book and you need to read both. ‘Cause I said so.
Smut Factor: 3 stars- Not Bad
Character likability: 5 stars- He’s my book boyfriend and I want to BE her.
Storytelling: 5 stars- I wake up thinking this really happened.
Writing and editing quality: 5 stars - Excellent!
So, you have read Normal, which is told through the POV of Rory. Well, this is the same story, just through Sam's perspective. I know, normally what people think. What's the point in writing another book that's the same, through another perspective? If you read Normal, then you know just how emotional that read was. In my personal opinion, being able to enjoy this book through the POV of Sam, really just adds to the beauty that is the tragic story.
The author here does a wonderful job of giving this story such a different spin. We already know what has happened with Rory and how devastating her history is, but to be able to walk through this with Sam and know exactly how he was feeling upon meeting Rory and everything after, was almost like reading a new story.
Get ready to open up all of those emotions once again, because even though you're not getting it through the POV of Rory, you still feel the pain of her past, especially since it takes a while before Sam knows Rory's story.
I felt that this novella helped add depth to Sam's already complex character, but it also made me more frustrated with both Rory and Sam. Being outside of Rory's thoughts really made her decisions all the more bewildering and I found myself just as confused and frustrated at times as Sam. I felt that Sam was overly apologetic and was too worried about upsetting Rory all the time. As much as I love Sam, his relationship/friendship with Rory felt too all consuming. I did like getting the backstory about his father/family and insight into his friendship with Kendall & Chelle though and more explanation about his "anger issues". Although I felt his inner dialogue and voice was for the most part true of a teenage boy, sometimes he seemed almost too mature/understanding of the events unfolding around him. I suppose with his history though, he was forced to grow up faster than his peers.
Overall, I really enjoyed getting this alternate view point of the events in Normal and am excited to read the final book in the series, Okay.
