One young woman has raged against those who threaten to keep away what matters most—family, love, choice. Her quiet revolution is about to explode into full-scale rebellion.
With exquisite prose, the emotionally gripping conclusion to the international–bestselling Matched trilogy returns Cassia, Ky, and Xander to the Society to save the one thing they have been denied for so long, the power to choose.

I found reached incredibly dull, very little suspense or drama. I actually felt myself encouraging the death of Ky so that there was a twist and something interesting happened. I usually really like a love triangle but with Cassia, Xander and Ky, I really kinda hated it more and more as the books went on. I feel like Cassia should have been with Xander because he did all he could to try and protect her, in the slight hope that she would choose him. Ky just kept pushing her into more and more danger and literally lied to her numerous times. I also don’t feel like Indies death was written well either, she was an integral part of books 2/3 and basically died without any emotion or depth.
If the series kept the same tone in matched throughout, it had the potential to be a good series, however it became, dull, monotone and predictable by the end.
It might be good for maybe 12-16 year olds but after that it’s a push to be enjoyable.
Reached is the story of Cassia's rebellion; we've seen all the foundations laid out before us in the previous novels and now we're finally getting to see what the Rising really is and how the people in and out of it are getting on; the best part? Most of it is in secret, so we do get some bum-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of tension.
For the most part we see the characters playing out their fake roles within the society, like Xander and his healing, whilst Cassia, Ky and Indie work on the inside trying to push the rebellion along. There's a massive air of mystery hanging around the characters because Condie doesn't ever really let us see their true intentions; at one point I was sure there was some double agent business going on. The nice part of this though is that we get to see the rebellion through the eyes of everyone whereas in the previous books I couldn't really imagine what the rebellion really was and who was actually supporting it.
This was an enjoyable read in so far as you get most of the answers to all of the questions you were left with at the end of Crossed. But it doesn't half take a long time to get them. The biggest let down for this book for me was just the pace at which new things happened; it felt like there were big sections of the book which didn't really do anything and I was left trying to convince myself that it would get better soon. And of course it did, but it's a push to want to pick up the book if you've left it overnight. This is, however, a really minor criticism in the grand scheme of things - we all know what a bad YA read is like and this just isn't it!
I don't want to say too much about the storyline for fear of giving even the tiniest hint away, but do pick up this book and give it a read. It's a lovely ending to a fantastic, thoughtfully written journey for our characters and it would be sad to miss it. Just have some chocolate or something ready as a bribe to keep going about midway through!

This book was such a disappointment. The series started so great with Matched, went downhill with Crossed, and reached a whole new low with Reached. (no pun intended)
How could something so great get so pointless and boring? I really loved the first book, I couldn't put it down. Crossed was a bit painful, but I got through it. Then Reached happened...
The book focused on the cure and the search for it, and different kind of plants and pills, instead of focusing on the main characters and their relationship. There was barely any interaction between Cassia and Ky. Their reunion was very anti-climatic and it just never got better.
The revelation of the 'big' secret - Cassia forgotten memory - barely made me shrug. Cassia was one of the people who messed with the sorting ceremony. She might be the reason why Ky showed up as her extra match. Big wow... I think it would be far more interesting if Xander was behind it. If he added Ky, because he wanted to see if Cassia would still pick him if she had a choice. But no, it was just an accident. Really, Ally? You couldn't come up with anything better?
Matched was a love story. Crossed was a (at times painful) journey. Reached was a waste of time. I actually found myself skipping entire pages after realising they are all going to be about the bloody cure. I didn't care about the cure and the chemical processes behind it! I wanted to read about the characters I fell in love with!
There was a happy ending, but at that point I didn't even care.
You failed me Ally Condie. I won't forget it.
The third books best feature is that it now includes all three main characters viewpoints, which I think is a nice idea, and one the other books don't use, and it is nice to see all of the characters feelings, even if we are TOLD what they feel far more than we are actually shown.
However, the author continues to impose all these harsh dystopian rules and curtails of freedom on these poor characters, without proper explanation of WHY the authorities do the things they do. And I don't mean this in a 'making a political statement' kind of way. It's in a 'poorly written' kind of way.
One of the many examples, is when on of the main characters is upset because they are not allowed to keep a photo of a loved one in their wallet. The author tries really hard to ramp up the oppression with statements like this. However, it leaves the reader wondering 'Why on earth aren't they allowed to keep a photo of family in their wallet?' The answer? It makes for better oppression by the author. But readers today need more substance to their stories, the dystopian world has to be believable, with reasons WHY the authorities run the society the way they do. Other YA dystopian do this brilliantly and it makes for a believable world. I feel with this one, there is oppression without it being in the least bit believable.
A Spoiler Free Bit About The Book
Against all odds, after crossing the canyons and surviving, Ky and Cassia are back in the Society, waiting for the Pilot's voice to tell them it's time.
Time for rebellion. Time for what they've always longed for.
A choice.
My Review
I needed a quick beginning. I needed stuff to start happening almost immediately. I remembered the slow start to 'Crossed' and I begged for 'Reached' to be different. Obviously Ally Condie didn't hear me. 'Reached' took such a long time to get off the ground. So long, in fact, if it wasn't the finale in a trilogy I would've put it down. But as often do, I persevered, wanting stuff to happen now, not being motivated in the slightest to read it but still making myself. when stuff started happening it was good. It just took a long time to get to it.
While I'm on the negatives, the style was contrasting in places which struck me as being very bizarre. Sometimes the writing was so beautiful and descriptive, the sentences flowing like they were born that way, but other times it seemed too simple, child like even. Both these styles are fine . . . but not together. It clashed a bit for me.
I also found a typo. I know some people find typos in every book they read but I don't, I'm a fast reader. I don't linger long enough to notice mistakes. But I saw this one. It stuck out to me like it was in bold. I even read it over a couple of times to make sure it wasn't just me not understanding. I'm pretty sure it was a typo. The reason it was such a big deal was that it took me out of the world and put me back in my own head. And that's not something you want to happen while you're reading.
Now for my favourite things. I loved that I got to- at last - see the world through Xander's eyes as well as Cassia's and Ky's. I've always loved Xander as a character and I loved him even more knowing what he was thinking. I understood him perfectly. He was my favourite characters and narrator of all three.
I was amazed by the way that everything fit together so perfectly. The trilogy must've been so thoroughly planned that Condie wouldn't have been surprised by anything she was writing. Everything, and I mean everything, turned out to be important. I applaud Condie's genius. Never before have I read a series that made every tiny detail mean something in the end.
The end was so beautifully poetic and I felt it matched Casia's personality which was the perfect sign off by her. Everything was complete and I felt soothed by the ending and content.
Evaluation
Plot - 8/10 - back in the Society and life isn't pretty
Way Plot Was Pursued - 8/10 - three points of view made this book
Characters - 9/10 - few new ones and the old ones were built on. I understood them so much more this time around
Style - 7/10 - clash of styles
Pace - 6/10 - too slow to start
Would I recommend it? - Yes. but only if you've read and liked 'Matched' and 'Crossed'.
Would I look up the author? No. Didn't love it enough.
'Reached' contented me with its ending but didn't blow me away.
