- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2008All Serena really wants at her new school is to fit in, but when you're deaf, that's not so easy. When some A-listers discover Serena's talent for reading lips, they offer her the chance to get in with them. But acceptance come with a price - the popular girls have enlisted her to spy and uncover any and every secret that's of use to them. But is getting into the in-crown really what a skater chick like Serena really wants, or is this new job of snooping showing her true colors as a conforming prep?
I had mixed reactions about Read My Lips. I'll start with main character Serena. While it was stated several times that she used to be a skater chick, I never really felt that it was rooted into her personality; it seemed to me that it was only an explanation to why Serena didn't feel completely comfortable hanging out with the popular girls. Despite that, I really liked Serena as the protagonist, because while she is insecure and sometimes dishonest, she eventually comes to her senses and does the right thing; her flaws make her more realistic. As for other characters, I really like how Serena's popular friends actually had good hearts. Miller is a different story; you never really learn much about him except for what Serena sees: that he is hot and that he loves her. I would've liked to know more about him. The plot wasn't terrible exciting at all times, and I found it odd that at Serena's new school everyone was a "cookie-cutter prep." However, there were some catfights, and I guess that small-town schools aren't as diverse as those in big cities.
I believe that the good aspects of this novel definitely outweighed the bad, and I enjoyed reading Read My Lips. It's definitely like Gossip Girl, but with much more integrity. Read My Lips is a guilty-pleasure read with meaning.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2014I was under the impression that this book was about how to read some ones lips. I have a friend that is deaf. Well its not so I threw the book in the trash without ever reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2019My 12 year old daughter loved this book. She actually had tears when she finished because she didn't want it to end. Wish it was part of a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2013A great book for teens. I read this book for a report for my sign language class. She doesn't sign but its a great book
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2011If I could give it zero stars, I would. I'm very sorry to have to say that this book is the only truly horrible book I have ever read that I wish was good. The story promises potential and an opportunity to learn something. However the writing style is horrible. With badly constructed sentences that don't seem to divulge anything more about our protagonist other than that she is: deaf, a self labeled 'skater-punk' who wants to fit in with A-listers, and in three seconds seems to fall madly in love with the only other 'different' person she meets. The love angle is pathetic and seems to have been put together by chopping up every trash chick-lit book for horny teens. You hardly hear mention of Serena's deafness except to give her the power of super lip-reading and an odd assortment of thoughts about having been teased or feeling different. And even these seem to have been inserted as reluctant afterthoughts. This story seems more like a strange mixture of a daydream, and fantasy with bad writing. I've read fanfiction better than this. I have no idea how this got published. This story deserves much better. The worst waste of money and time. If it weren't a Kindle edition I would either return is or throw it in the rubbish. DO NOT WASTE ANYTHING ON THIS BOOK.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2015My daughter couldn't put this down. Read it cover to cover over the weekend. My daughter can read lips and said this book was spot on.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2013I appreciated that the deaf girl in this story is presented as so normal, partly because the author has a deaf niece... and that the teenage boy "rebel" whom she connects with is so attractively alive. I found the characters and the story believable. Although it is a short book, it presents several facets and conflicts of the teens and their lives in very sympathetic ways. Teri Brown makes it clear that even when adults think it is easy to make moral decisions, it is often much more complicated than we remember. I would have loved to grow up with parents and other adults as kind as the ones in "Read My Lips."
One major thing I like about books for children and teens is that they are shorter and more to the point, helping me see into the minds of the young and how they see the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2011This is a great read for anyone who can relate to high school drama and loves to read about a heroine and happy endings. Over coming adversity and romance included in this book.
