~ What ~
This forty-six-page board book with padded covers and rounded corners targets four-to-eight-year-old children who enjoy reading Bible stories. With no scary scenes, the depictions are happy, carefree, and positive. Due to some complicated wording, the book would best be read out loud to beginner readers.
With colorful, full-page illustrations, this book of a dozen Old Testament and ten New Testament stories promotes physical contact and interaction between the reader and a young child. With the title of the story on the left side and Scripture verse references, one small paragraph of the story is below, and the opposite page has the suggested task to do with the child. Bible stories range from creation, Isaac’s birth, Joseph’s coat, Moses in a basket, the Red Sea parting, Ruth and Naomi, Hannah’s prayer, Samuel being called by God, David singing, Esther asking for help, and Daniel with the lions to Jesus’s birth, Him being lost, stopping the storm, as a Shepherd, feeding many, loving children, and meeting Zacchaeus, as well as how Christ is with us, always listens, and is up in Heaven.
~ Why ~
This is a fun read for those who like engaging stories where the reader and child participate. I like how tickling, hugging, kissing, pointing out things, making hand gestures, and praying are incorporated into the story. The happy, innocuous illustrations have plenty of detail to hold a toddler’s attention.
~ Why Not ~
Although the book does not explain the plan of salvation and the scenes are only told in a positive manner, each story has a limited amount of information that follows the Bible. However, this may encourage dialogue with the child about God and Jesus. I think the six-to-eight year old may be too old for this book.
~ Who ~
Scandinavia Publishing House copyrights the texts and illustrations. No information is given on the illustrator or version of the Holy Bible referenced.
~ Wish ~
With many two and three syllable words, the book may be too hard to comprehend for beginner readers; having less complicated words might be needed.
~ Want ~
If your toddler wants a book that contains twenty-two Bible stories with physical play time between the reader and child, this may be a good selection that promotes interaction.
Thanks to Book Look Bloggers for this complimentary book that I am freely reviewing.
The pages are filled with short stories on one side and activities you can do with your little on the other side. Such as ….Blowing away the water in Moses parts the great sea, and giving your baby a kiss because Jesus is with you. The illustrations are adorable with happy faces just shining throughout.
I love the interaction ideas from this book. They are simple, fun, and get that giggle box going! This is a good little bedtime cuddle book. Plus, your sharing God’s love in a sweet fun way with your little one’s. They are learning and loving God, can’t get better than that!
BookLook Bloggers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.
The illustrations are cute, with a unique (digital + crayon strokes) style to them. The images are colorful and sweet.
What I really appreciate about the variety of topics in this book is that there are many stories/themes which just don't seem to get highlighted in many of the books for little ones. Each page opening is a different topic. Here they are:
- God Made Everything (Genesis 1:1-27; Creation)
- The Beautiful Rainbow (Genesis 7:1-12; Noah's Ark)
- A Happy Baby (Genesis 21:1-7; Isaac)
- A Coat for Joseph (Genesis 37:1-3)
- A Baby in a Basket (Exodus 2:1-10; Moses)
- Away Goes the Water (Exodus 14:15-22; Moses/Parting of the sea)
- Ruth Stayed with Naomi (Ruth 1:14-18)
- A Quiet Prayer (1 Samuel 1:9-18; Hannah)
- Who Is Calling Samuel? (1 Samuel 3:1-10)
- David Sings to God (1 Samuel 16:18-23)
- Esther Asks for Help (Esther 5:1-5)
- Daniel and the Lions (Daniel 6:16-23)
- Baby Jesus (Luke 2:1-20; Matthew 2:1-12; Birth of Jesus)
- Jesus is Lost (Luke 2:39-52; Jesus at the temple)
- Jesus Stops the Storm (Mark 4:35-41)
- Jesus the Shepherd (Luke 15:1-7)
- Food for Everyone (Matthew 14:14-21; Loaves and Fish)
- Come and Get a Hug! (Matthew 19:13-15; Jesus loves the little children)
- High Up in the Tree (Luke 19:1-10; Zacchaeus)
- Jesus Is with Me (Matthew 28:20)
- God Always Listens (John 14:13-14)
- Up in Heaven (Revelation 21:3-4)
While I think the images are cute, I must say that this book just cannot keep my little one's attention. (In fact, he saw me looking at it by myself and came over to cover it up with another book.) He has not let me get farther than a couple pages of reading it to him, and he loves to listen to books. It is just not a hit in our house.
I do appreciate the concept of the book (short stories for little ones with interactive moments to bring the story to life for the child), but think that the stories themselves are lacking. They are so short (just a couple sentences each) and don't have much to them. Some of the sentences just don't seem to flow like a natural conversation and, personally, I feel like they would have more "punch" to them if they had been written in rhyme.
While this book may be great for some, it's just not one for us.
