I love taking photos of friends and family as well as capturing shots of local people when on holiday and decided to buy this book to get some advice on how to make them better.
I'm glad to say it has already improved my photographs considerably.
Rather than so many books which baffle and intimidate with technical jargon, Henry Carroll's advice is to learn the rules but not worry about having to adhere to them all the time. His approach liberates and inspires you to have confidence in your own photography, which I really appreciated as it means you enjoy the process so much more!
The books' layout is great too: A guideline on each page is accompanied by an inspirational example and often a deconstruction of the image - all presented in a very accessible, easy to understand manner. Some may find the style a little too simple for their tastes but it takes real intelligence to take complicated concepts and explain them in a simple and easy to understand way (without losing any of the content), which this book does fantastically.
As a result I've already been able to apply some "layering", used more interesting crops and compositions and think my "street photography" is also improving. I can now look forward to looking back on photos of my life via much higher quality photos than I might have if I hadn't read this informative, inspiring and fun to read book.

A fantastic guide for the beginning and intermediate photographer, illustrated with 50 fine art photographs. The price is right, too. I suggest this title to all of my college level Digital Photo students.

I was hoping for something a little more original, but the advice seems all pretty similar to that found in tons of other, better books. It has a few interesting suggestions, but not the inspiration I inferred from the title.

So I have been a photographer for over 10 years & I became a photographer just as the technology world was converting to the digital age & sometimes you forget some of the basic principles over time & with this book it’s definitely a good read especially when it let you some things that school may have taught you in the past or even things nowadays that could be so simple that you overlook or even over think them too.
This book is great for all levels of photographers of all kinds.

The books follow the same format as the author previous book,
Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs, but now focusing more on people. It's not just about the portraits technical side such as camera, lens, aperture etc. but focus more on composition & aesthetics aspects. I think it's kind of different book than other portrait photography books which is good to add to your collection.

Great for a novice, not great for an experienced photographer.

Bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas, arrived on time, had a flick through and thought it was very informative and interesting - for me at least as I am a photography novice. He is much more experienced and only read the first page before realising it was a bit too novice for his liking and hasn't opened it since. If buying for someone that knows a lots about cameras/photography it is probably not best, however for a novice it is very informative with lots of nice pictures! I have now stolen the book off him and am learning for myself!

Spot on - genuinely feel inspired and more knowledgeable about taking photographs of people.

I bought this book because I have enjoyed other books in this series by Henry Carroll; this book is no exception.
Each page of the book has a photograph of a person taken by a world class photographer followed by a one page straight to the point explanation of how to take a similar photograph yourself.
The transfer of knowledge on each page makes you want to experiment and develop your own photography skills; it really is like having someone showing you the ropes!
There are a handful of 'Technical Tangents' in the book which give a little more theory but not too much that you become overwhelmed - the balance is spot.
After reading this book, I genuinely feel inspired and more knowledgeable about photographing people.

Really enjoyed this book. Yes, it's a little short but that's one of the things I liked about it. It's short as there's no waffle. Think about this, try this idea, this works like this etc. Definitely worth the money I paid.

bought as a Christmas gift and it was well received. I flicked through it myself when wrapping it and I thought it would be one I would like myself. Not at all a techie guide but, as with the series of books, offers examples and guidance on picture making.
