"This is a beautiful concept executed beautifully. It’s one of the best editions I have ever covered at Bible Design Blog. It fills a niche that has largely gone unaddressed in the past: the need for a Bible designed for a lifetime of reading."

"The ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set is an outstanding product, one to treasure, perhaps even for a lifetime. In its text it is the words of God. In its form it is very nearly a work of art. It is beautiful. It is simple. It is beautifully simple and simply beautiful."

I ordered this and had my wife wrap it up and give it to me for Christmas. :-)
Shortly after Christmas, I started reading in the Gospels (v 5 of this set) and am as of 1/24/17 reading in Acts. I find this to be a great way to read through the Bible - whether you read it in a year or a month. Reading the book of John in this format, for example, even though I have read it dozens of times, brought new insights. The Gospel of John is astonishingly raw, and when read straight through, gives the reader the sense of bewilderment the followers of Jesus felt as they tried to understand who he was and take in all that he taught and did.
I read the Bible in various different translations, including William Tyndale's original 1526 translation (which is quite hard to get used to). All of them have been useful to me. I haven't yet found the time to dig deeply into Greek and Hebrew studies and "textual criticism". I don't assume that any particular translation is perfect. For the past few years, I have been getting away from all the padding that is often added to Bibles - commentary and extra stuff that is not the scripture. I much prefer to just read the Bible itself. Overall, the message of God comes through in all of the translations I have read. For now, this is my favorite Bible to read. I would love to have other translations presented in similar form.
My set arrived yesterday, and I am currently half way through the book of Genesis. Prior to owning this Bible, I struggled to read more than 2 chapters of the Bible at a time – not because I didn’t want to read more, but simply because I’d get so distracted by all of the notes, commentary, footnotes, cross references, etc. in Bibles that I’d end up spending more time reading these elements than actual Bible text. There is a time and place for this type of in-depth study, but there is also a time and place for solely focusing on Bible text. The ESV Reader’s Bible Six-Volume Set facilitates reading the Bible in a manner similar to how you would read a well written novel. It is truly a different and rich experience! I keep noticing connections I’d never seen in the Bible prior, and have also had new insights. It is amazing the effect that removing chapter and verse numbers has on the reading experience. You end up reading the Bible as more of a cohesive story. (Side note: For reference, there is an “index of chapters” at the back of each book that tells you on which page each chapter starts. So, if you want to go look up a passage in a traditional Bible, you’d know which chapter to look up.)
As you may know, there is a cloth over board version of this set as well as a cowhide over board version. After reading a few reviews online of people who’d received/purchased copies of both sets for review, I chose to purchase the cloth over board set. Such a great choice! The books are so comfortable to hold in your hand. The cloth combined with the superior paper and binding quality make for a set of outstanding quality. I appreciate how much thought Crossway put into selecting such great materials.
One note on price: Spending a large amount on a Bible may cause some to pause; however, upon receiving the set, I believe you will find the asking price (even the list price) is well warranted. No regrets here at all.
The website for this Reader’s Bible notes that limited quantities are available, and I’ve read elsewhere that this set is a limited edition. I encourage you to obtain a copy while you can! I hope Crossway decides to offer this set for an extended period of time, but just in case not, get yours today! (Note: I have no ties to Crossway – my encouragement to buy a copy of this set comes purely from my experience with the set thus far.)
I look forward to using this Bible set for years to come!
