From the Author
Since the first book of the Reading The Dead series, Sarah Milton has been a depicted as a woman haunted not only by the specter sharing her apartment, but by the ghosts of her troubled past. The death of her mother had a significant impact on her development. Just as important was the presence of Harold Edgar Sands, otherwise known as "The Fancy Dress Killer," for his penchant of dressing his victims in nice outfits and photographing them, post-mortem.
From our first introduction to Sarah, we discover that she has a newspaper clipping of his arrest hanging on her wall. One surmises that it's because that was the case that cemented her career... but that's not all there is to the story.
In Reading The Dead: Fidelis In Aeternum, we discover just how deep her trauma with Harry Sands really goes, via flashbacks to her time as a beat cop involved in bringing him tojustice, a feat that almost resulted in her demise. This chapter in Sarah Milton's continuing saga is about rising above her past and sets the stage for her uncertain, but hopefully brighter, future.

Reading the first book isn't strictly necessary, though with one particular character I felt you were supposed to exclaim – oh no, not him! rather than – who is this guy?
I'd recommend reading the companion novella Reading The Dead: Anna's Adventures too.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This time, her loyalty, her friends', and more about their individual gifts is revealed.
I was honored to read an advance copy of this book from Booksprout.
In my honest opinion, it's another thrilling, action packed read.
Sarah is apparently not the only member of the LAPD with supernatural gifts. Love and death also don't seem to mix well.
If you enjoy intense cop serials with a supernatural twist, this could be your next "can't put it down" read.
I received a free copy, through LoP, in exchange for a review.
Now on to the next, or so Sarah Milton thought. She never really thought she would be revisiting the “Fancy Dress Killer” Harry Sands, since he was convicted and locked away. But now, copycat killings are starting to surface, leaving Sarah and Anna, her ghost partner in crime, trying to figure out are they truly just copycat killings or is there something more to it, something otherwordly? This investigation along with another one, where her former partner and mentor is being accused of murdering a woman, (another police officer) has Sarah right on the edge of sanity. A lot of surprises and old memories are going to be brought to the surface and hopefully Sarah and Anna can get to the bottom of the mystery, before more dead bodies show up.
'Sands wrapped his weapon in both hands, before looping it around the police officer's slender throat. He lifted her head by her windpipe, savoring her distressed gagging as she struggled for oxygen. Her body twisted and flopped under him as she attempted to free her hands and escape, but she couldn't move. Her attacker pinned her to the ground. Sands pulled her leash tighter, relishing the feeling of her life fading under his hands.
“Don't fight it, officer,” he breathed into her ear as he tugged her head further off the ground. “Death is the natural conclusion to everything. Give into it. Welcome its dark embrace as you would a lover.”
GREAT second book! I was so hooked, from the very beginning. Loved the pace of the story line and also all of the flashbacks. It explained what had happened between Sands' and Sarah's characters and how everything comes full circle. Highly recommend!
This is the second book in the series that follows Sarah Milton, a police detective in Los Angeles, and her sidekick, Anna Enigma, who is a twelve or thirteen year old ghost.
This story finds Sarah revisiting a previous case, ”The Fancy Dress Killer”, Harry Sands. There is now a copycat killer out there who is targeting people involved in the capture and conviction of Harry Sands. Sarah is juggling trying to clear her ex-partner of murder charges, working the case, dealing with relationships, and living with Anna. This case is complex and there is involvement from the spiritual world that affects the physical world. Only by combining information from both of these planes can the mystery be solved and the killer captured. Anna explores places that Sarah cannot, and Sarah has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. This is how the mystery can be solved and yet again, Sarah is challenged with explaining what she knows to her coworkers.
J. B. Cameron is an incredibly talented storyteller. There is a lot of depth to all of the characters and they are all very well developed. There was so much going on in this book. However, it was so well written and the transitions were so well done that it was easy to connect everything that happened. The murder mystery was riveting and the intersection of the two worlds (paranormal and physical) was really dynamic and fascinating. The ending was quite a surprise and is going to lead to some future challenges for our two leading ladies.
As a thriller/suspense – awesome; as a paranormal mystery – awesome.
Things that make this such a great book (and series) include: the depth, humor, intense plot, the characters along with their flaws, the relationship between Sarah and Anna, and the tension and suspense. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
